Similar to Catroid, AppInventor also allows to create Android apps using a visual programming language inspired by MIT's Scratch. The biggest difference is that Catroid allows to develop the app using only the Android device whereas AppInventor needs an additional PC to develop the app. Also, AppInventor currently is much more advanced than Catroid. Other major differences are that Catroid primarily focuses on kids as developers and that it has a community site for sharing app project code similar to Scratch's community site.
Please consider using the free software PicSay from Shinycore which allows, among many other great features, to create a large variety of very nicely formatted text boxes, also on top of other pictures, see some samples on Google Images
The resulting texts can then be imported into Paintroid to add them to other pictures or to make their background transparent.
There are also PicSayPro and several PicSay Pro Font packages by the same company that are reasonably priced and support even much more fonts and features.
There is an experimental Project described at Catroid without Android Device.
