An Impact Map is an artifact of the Behavior Driven Development (BDD) . In short, Impact Mapping is a way of visualizing the relationship between the business goals behind a project, the actors that will be affected by the project, and the features that will enable the project to deliver the expected results. Impact maps are simple to create and easy to understand, and they can be a very useful tool for documenting business goals and validating assumptions. This makes them a great place to kick off the requirements-analysis process and to get a high-level view of what you’re trying to achieve.

An impact map is a mind-map built during a conversation, or series of conversations, between stakeholders and members of the development team. The conversation centers around four types of questions:

  • Why? (Goal)
  • Who? (Who is impacted)
  • What?(What capabilities do the impacted stakeHolder requires to contribute to the goal)
  • How? (The features that will support the capabilities)

We have used this approach to provide for a quick overview of the overall Ld4P initiative, and where this works fits into it. That's it, Why, who it does impact, the capabilities required by the stake holder to contribute to the goal, and the features to support those capabilities. See Below
