This file is updated using the php ../thirdparty/php-peg/cli.php SSTemplateParser.peg > SSTemplateParser.php script - it has not been manually altered.

These old syntaxes do work, but they aren't documented (not even in 3.x, 4.x, or 5.x docs) and were clearly meant to be eventually removed in favour of the currently documented syntax.
