For the 2019 restaging of Shu Lea Cheang’s Garlic=Rich Air, artist Melanie Hoff created a new garlic trading game based on the Trust Game, which was developed by economists to study the role of trust in economic relationships. As part of the project, hundreds of bulbs of organic garlic were planted at CycleX, the farm/media lab founded by Cheang in Andes, NY. Players can accrue virtual garlic by playing the game, which may be traded in for real garlic bulbs in a special performance following the garlic harvest each summer.

Content Warning

The website has a basic word filter on it, but it is possible for users to input crude terms as their username, which would be displayed on the leaderboard.

Crating

NUC and wifi router should be packed in original boxes, then soft-packed and placed in a provided crate. Peripheral cables can be packed in provided soft cases and placed in a provided crate.

Technical Setup

  • Screen (approx 23", HDMI) to be provided by venue. Ideally this should match the screen used in AHH02.

  • Leaderboard screen is bolted to side of cart with two bolts (VESA Bolts / washers, provided by venue). Attach screen to the left side of the cart, facing outwards. Thread the bolts through the two metal L-brackets on the Left side of the truck and through the plexi panel to attach to the screen. Use washers as needed.

  • The power & HDMI cable should be threaded straight down and hidden along the chassis of the cart. You may need angled connectors as the screen will be flush against the plexi panel.

  • The power cable should be plugged into plug strip hidden at base of cart

  • The NUC should be situated in the bed of the garlic cart.

  • The HDMI cable should be threaded into the bed of the cart at the seam between the side panel and the panel behind the driver. Connect HDMI cable to NUC. See diagram below.

  • Connect NUC power along the same path to plug into plug strip.

– Connect NUC to LinkSys using ethernet cable

    • Note: It is tough to fit all on 1 power strip

    • Leaderboard Screen should be 23" or so; it should match the screen used for AHH02 Cheang. It should have HDMI input.

Maintenance

  • Venues may decide to plant, harvest, and distribute garlic.
  • Rhizome is planning a crop of garlic to be harvested in summer 2020. Distribution plans are not yet decided, but players of the game will be able to cash in their virtual garlic for real garlic as a part of a public performance in 2020.
  • Database should be cleaned after each garlic distribution.

Possible Issues

  • System (router + machine) should boot into game on its own
