## A first meeting | ||
Have you ever thought that some aspect about your life on campus could be improved by a digital application? Or are you all for transparency? Or maybe you work for a university or college and you want to encourage student participation in your educational institution? | ||

Join us on **February 15 at 5 p.m. near Brussels central station**. On this first meeting, you can meet other people interested in open data in education in Belgium, as well as people who have experience with open data in general. Together, we would like to figure out which data can be interesting to open up. We would also like to get an overview of all things that are open already and which improvements are feasible. | ||

### Why open data? | ||
The current generation of students was raised with the internet. Their smartphone is always within reach. They want to be able to see and do everything on this small device. It's impossible for educational institutions to provide and maintain all tools that are useful for students. But the data that is necessary to build them is property of the institution and often not publicly accessible. Therefore, entrepreneurial students or staff members cannot just build it themselves. | ||

That's why we believe we need "open data". Open data is data that is freely accessible and can be used by everyone. | ||
For data that isn't publicly available, like personal information, data can be shared after explicit individual consent (data is not locked in). | ||
Open data can stimulate innovative applications in education. It also offers the opportunity for enterpreneurial students and/or staff members to help build towards a better college or university. | ||
|

Heb jij ook ooit gedacht dat een bepaald aspect van het leven op de campus beter kon op basis van een digitale applicatie? Of ben je een grote voorstander van transparantie? Of misschien werk je voor een onderwijsinstelling en wil je studentenparticipatie aanmoedigen? | ||

Dan nodigen we je graag uit op **woensdag 15 februari 2017 om 17u nabij het centraal station in Brussel** voor de eerste meeting van de werkgroep rond open data en open kennis in het Belgisch hoger onderwijs. Graag zouden we samen bekijken welke data interessant kan zijn om open te stellen. Bovendien willen we een overzicht krijgen van wat er al open is en welke verbeteringen haalbaar zijn. | ||

### Waarom open data? | ||
De huidige generatie studenten is opgegroeid met het internet, hun smartphone altijd in de aanslag. Hierop willen ze alles kunnen zien en alles kunnen doen. Het is voor onderwijsinstellingen - zowel op vlak van focus als mankracht - niet haalbaar om alle tools die nuttig zijn voor studenten, te ontwikkelen en te onderhouden. Aan de andere kant is de meeste data momenteel eigendom van de onderwijsinstelling en bovendien niet altijd publiek beschikbaar. Een ondernemende student of personeelslid kan hier dus niet altijd zelf mee aan de slag. | ||

Daarom geloven wij dat er nood is aan “open data”. Open data is data die toegankelijk is en vrij gebruikt kan worden door iedereen. | ||
Bij gegevens die niet publiek zijn, zoals persoonlijke gegevens, kan data gedeeld worden na expliciete individuele toestemming (data zit niet vast). | ||
Open data kan innovatieve toepassingen in het onderwijs stimuleren. Bovendien geeft het kansen aan ondernemende studenten en/of personeelsleden om mee te helpen bij het bouwen van een betere universiteit of hogeschool. | ||
