Overview

Quota defines the amount of time you want to allocate each day to work on tasks that are added to VIR. Instead of manually defining quota amounts for every calendar day (which you still could), VIR allows you to specify rules (e.g. 8 sessions every weekend and 4 sessions every weekday).

To manage your quota rules, go to the Quota tab.

In VIR, time estimates are defined by sessions, which are the smallest unit of time that you spend working on tasks. The duration of a session is completely up to you. For example, a session can mean 30 minutes to you. Consequently, if you have 5 hours of free time on a given day, you would tell VIR that you have 10 sessions available for this day. If a task takes 20 hours to complete, you would tell VIR that the task requires 40 sessions, and so on.

If you are new to VIR, you should add a "default" rule by clicking on the New Rule button, change "On" to "Everyday", enter the desired amount (e.g. 5), and click Save. By doing so, each day will be set to have 5 free sessions by default.

You can add more quota rules on the Quota tab, and reorder them by dragging and dropping. Quota rules further down the list have higher priority. Each rule should affect one or more days; on any given day, the quota for the day will be set by the highest-priority rule that affects this day. This means quota rules that affect the same days will override each other, instead of being added together.

Each quota rule consists of three things: how it repeats, its optional start/end dates, and its amount.

To define the repetition pattern, you can choose from the following options:

  • "On", which means that this rule affects a single day;
  • "Every Weekday", which means that this rule affects every Monday to Friday;
  • "Every Weekend", which means that this rule affects every Saturday and Sunday;
  • "Custom", which means that you can then customize the days of the week when this rule is in effect.

You can also optionally limit the start and/or end dates of a rule (unless you selected the "On" pattern above). If you want the rule to repeat forever, select "Always".

Quick-edit from the timeline

You can also perform quick-edit the quota amount of any given day from the Timeline tab. Simply click on the quota number and enter the desired amount. Doing so is equivalent to adding a new rule (at the bottom of the list) that affects the given day only; however, if the given day is currently affected by a single-day rule, this rule will be edited instead.

Auto clean-up of unused quota rules

Any quota rule that has an end date (including single-day rules) may be automatically deleted if its end date is more than 7 days in the past.
