 Compensation thrives on lack of awareness and on effort, so most of what we need to do to reduce it is be passively aware; know what is happening and draw attention to it, but not try hard to change it. It is different to conflation, which is more to do with linking two things by habit rather than unintentionally doing something due to effort.
