Guessing, crash happens here
static inline netdev_tx_t __netdev_start_xmit(const struct net_device_ops *ops,
struct sk_buff *skb, struct net_device *dev,
bool more)
{
__this_cpu_write(softnet_data.xmit.more, more);
return ops->ndo_start_xmit(skb, dev);
}
because ndo_start_xmit is empty.
The current function looks like the black hole netdev.
I would expect the function to be more like
static netdev_tx_t netdev_start_xmit(...)
{
return NETDEV_TX_OK;
}

v2: Simplife the implementation of ndo_start_xmit(). v1: This patch simply fills ndo_start_xmit() in netdev and no other operations. In the ipv6 network, after the date is sent, the netdev ndo_start_xmit() hook will be called. But s10ssi does not fill the ndo_start_xmit() in netdev, so it will case a "NULL pointer" crash. In the ipv6 network, run the following command: $ ifconfig s10hssi0 up Will cause the machine to crash: [ 961.346621] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000000 [ 961.346651] PGD 0 P4D 0 [ 961.346661] Oops: 0010 [OFS#1] SMP NOPTI [ 961.346673] CPU: 62 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/62 Kdump: loaded Tainted: G OE --------- - - [ 961.346702] Hardware name: Inspur SA5212M5/YZMB-00882-104, BIOS 4.1.8 05/21/2019 [ 961.346721] RIP: 0010: (null) [ 961.346734] Code: Bad RIP value. This function is just a fake trans. In the new patch, remove the operation of free skb, And observer wherther there is a memleak in future test. |
Hi Tom,
I believe the dummy ndo_start_xmit must free the sk_buff. Typically a “normal” driver would put the sk_buff on a descriptor ring, and the sk_buff would be freed when the transmit has been complete.

[ Upstream commit d65614a ] I met below warning when cating a small size(about 80bytes) txt file on 9pfs(msize=2097152 is passed to 9p mount option), the reason is we miss iov_iter_advance() if the read count is 0 for zerocopy case, so we didn't truncate the pipe, then iov_iter_pipe() thinks the pipe is full. Fix it by removing the exception for 0 to ensure to call iov_iter_advance() even on empty read for zerocopy case. [ Upstream commit 829933e ] For each device, the nosy driver allocates a pcilynx structure. A use-after-free might happen in the following scenario: 1. Open nosy device for the first time and call ioctl with command NOSY_IOC_START, then a new client A will be malloced and added to doubly linked list. 2. Open nosy device for the second time and call ioctl with command NOSY_IOC_START, then a new client B will be malloced and added to doubly linked list. 3. Call ioctl with command NOSY_IOC_START for client A, then client A will be readded to the doubly linked list. Now the doubly linked list is messed up. 4. Close the first nosy device and nosy_release will be called. In nosy_release, client A will be unlinked and freed. 5. Close the second nosy device, and client A will be referenced, resulting in UAF. The root cause of this bug is that the element in the doubly linked list is reentered into the list. Fix this bug by adding a check before inserting a client. If a client is already in the linked list, don't insert it. The following KASAN report reveals it: BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in nosy_release+0x1ea/0x210 Write of size 8 at addr ffff888102ad7360 by task poc CPU: 3 PID: 337 Comm: poc Not tainted 5.12.0-rc5+ #6 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (Q35 + ICH9, 2009), BIOS rel-1.12.0-59-gc9ba5276e321-prebuilt.qemu.org 04/01/2014 Call Trace: nosy_release+0x1ea/0x210 __fput+0x1e2/0x840 task_work_run+0xe8/0x180 exit_to_user_mode_prepare+0x114/0x120 syscall_exit_to_user_mode+0x1d/0x40 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xae Allocated by task 337: nosy_open+0x154/0x4d0 misc_open+0x2ec/0x410 chrdev_open+0x20d/0x5a0 do_dentry_open+0x40f/0xe80 path_openat+0x1cf9/0x37b0 do_filp_open+0x16d/0x390 do_sys_openat2+0x11d/0x360 __x64_sys_open+0xfd/0x1a0 do_syscall_64+0x33/0x40 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xae Freed by task 337: kfree+0x8f/0x210 nosy_release+0x158/0x210 __fput+0x1e2/0x840 task_work_run+0xe8/0x180 exit_to_user_mode_prepare+0x114/0x120 syscall_exit_to_user_mode+0x1d/0x40 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xae The buggy address belongs to the object at ffff888102ad7300 which belongs to the cache kmalloc-128 of size 128 The buggy address is located 96 bytes inside of 128-byte region [ffff888102ad7300, ffff888102ad7380) [ Modified to use 'list_empty()' inside proper lock - Linus ] Link: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/[email protected]/ Reported-and-tested-by: 马哲宇 (Zheyu Ma) <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Zheyu Ma <[email protected]> Cc: Greg Kroah-Hartman <[email protected]> Cc: Stefan Richter <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Sasha Levin <[email protected]>

The same deadlock was mentioned in upstream commit 28f5a8a ("ocfs2: should wait dio before inode lock in ocfs2_setattr()"). It seems that that commit only removed the cluster lock (the victim of above dead lock) from the ABBA deadlock party. End-user visible effects: Process hang in truncate -> ocfs2_setattr path and other processes hang at ocfs2_dio_end_io_write path. This is to fix the deadlock itself. It removes inode_lock() call from dio completion path to remove the deadlock and add ip_alloc_sem lock in setattr path to synchronize the inode modifications. [ Upstream commit bbd6f0a ] In bnxt_rx_pkt(), the RX buffers are expected to complete in order. If the RX consumer index indicates an out of order buffer completion, it means we are hitting a hardware bug and the driver will abort all remaining RX packets and reset the RX ring. The RX consumer index that we pass to bnxt_discard_rx() is not correct. We should be passing the current index (tmp_raw_cons) instead of the old index (raw_cons). This bug can cause us to be at the wrong index when trying to abort the next RX packet. Pach series "mm: thp: use generic THP migration for NUMA hinting fault", v3. When the THP NUMA fault support was added THP migration was not supported yet. So the ad hoc THP migration was implemented in NUMA fault handling. Since v4.14 THP migration has been supported so it doesn't make too much sense to still keep another THP migration implementation rather than using the generic migration code. It is definitely a maintenance burden to keep two THP migration implementation for different code paths and it is more error prone. Using the generic THP migration implementation allows us remove the duplicate code and some hacks needed by the old ad hoc implementation. A quick grep shows x86_64, PowerPC (book3s), ARM64 ans S390 support both THP and NUMA balancing. The most of them support THP migration except for S390. Zi Yan tried to add THP migration support for S390 before but it was not accepted due to the design of S390 PMD. For the discussion, please see: https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/4/27/953. Per the discussion with Gerald Schaefer in v1 it is acceptible to skip huge PMD for S390 for now. I saw there were some hacks about gup from git history, but I didn't figure out if they have been removed or not since I just found FOLL_NUMA code in the current gup implementation and they seems useful. Patch #1 ~ #2 are preparation patches. Patch #3 is the real meat. Patch #4 ~ #6 keep consistent counters and behaviors with before. Patch #7 skips change huge PMD to prot_none if thp migration is not supported. Test ---- Did some tests to measure the latency of do_huge_pmd_numa_page. The test VM has 80 vcpus and 64G memory. The test would create 2 processes to consume 128G memory together which would incur memory pressure to cause THP splits. And it also creates 80 processes to hog cpu, and the memory consumer processes are bound to different nodes periodically in order to increase NUMA faults. The below test script is used: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches # Run stress-ng for 24 hours ./stress-ng/stress-ng --vm 2 --vm-bytes 64G --timeout 24h & PID=$! ./stress-ng/stress-ng --cpu $NR_CPUS --timeout 24h & # Wait for vm stressors forked sleep 5 PID_1=`pgrep -P $PID | awk 'NR == 1'` PID_2=`pgrep -P $PID | awk 'NR == 2'` JOB1=`pgrep -P $PID_1` JOB2=`pgrep -P $PID_2` # Bind load jobs to different nodes periodically to force generate # cross node memory access while [ -d "/proc/$PID" ] do taskset -apc 8 $JOB1 taskset -apc 8 $JOB2 sleep 300 taskset -apc 58 $JOB1 taskset -apc 58 $JOB2 sleep 300 done With the above test the histogram of latency of do_huge_pmd_numa_page is as shown below. Since the number of do_huge_pmd_numa_page varies drastically for each run (should be due to scheduler), so I converted the raw number to percentage. patched base @us[stress-ng]: [0] 3.57% 0.16% [1] 55.68% 18.36% [2, 4) 10.46% 40.44% [4, 8) 7.26% 17.82% [8, 16) 21.12% 13.41% [16, 32) 1.06% 4.27% [32, 64) 0.56% 4.07% [64, 128) 0.16% 0.35% [128, 256) < 0.1% < 0.1% [256, 512) < 0.1% < 0.1% [512, 1K) < 0.1% < 0.1% [1K, 2K) < 0.1% < 0.1% [2K, 4K) < 0.1% < 0.1% [4K, 8K) < 0.1% < 0.1% [8K, 16K) < 0.1% < 0.1% [16K, 32K) < 0.1% < 0.1% [32K, 64K) < 0.1% < 0.1% Per the result, patched kernel is even slightly better than the base kernel. I think this is because the lock contention against THP split is less than base kernel due to the refactor. To exclude the affect from THP split, I also did test w/o memory pressure. This patch (of 7): Add orig_pmd to struct vm_fault so the "orig_pmd" parameter used by huge page fault could be removed, just like its PTE counterpart does. ASan reports a memory leak caused by evlist not being deleted on exit in perf-report, perf-script and perf-data. The problem is caused by evlist->session not being deleted, which is allocated in perf_session__read_header, called in perf_session__new if perf_data is in read mode. In case of write mode, the session->evlist is filled by the caller. This patch solves the problem by calling evlist__delete in perf_session__delete if perf_data is in read mode. Changes in v2: - call evlist__delete from within perf_session__delete v1: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/[email protected]/ ASan report follows: $ ./perf script report flamegraph ASan reports a heap-buffer-overflow in elf_sec__is_text when using perf-top. The bug is caused by the fact that secstrs is built from runtime_ss, while shdr is built from syms_ss if shdr.sh_type != SHT_NOBITS. Therefore, they point to two different ELF files. This patch renames secstrs to secstrs_run and adds secstrs_sym, so that the correct secstrs is chosen depending on shdr.sh_type. $ ASAN_OPTIONS=abort_on_error=1:disable_coredump=0:unmap_shadow_on_exit=1 ./perf top ================================================================= ==363148==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow on address 0x61300009add6 at pc 0x00000049875c bp 0x7f4f56446440 sp 0x7f4f56445bf0 READ of size 1 at 0x61300009add6 thread T6 #0 0x49875b in StrstrCheck(void*, char*, char const*, char const*) (/home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf+0x49875b) #1 0x4d13a2 in strstr (/home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf+0x4d13a2) #2 0xacae36 in elf_sec__is_text /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/symbol-elf.c:176:9 #3 0xac3ec9 in elf_sec__filter /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/symbol-elf.c:187:9 #4 0xac2c3d in dso__load_sym /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/symbol-elf.c:1254:20 #5 0x883981 in dso__load /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/symbol.c:1897:9 #6 0x8e6248 in map__load /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/map.c:332:7 #7 0x8e66e5 in map__find_symbol /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/map.c:366:6 #8 0x7f8278 in machine__resolve /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/event.c:707:13 #9 0x5f3d1a in perf_event__process_sample /home/user/linux/tools/perf/builtin-top.c:773:6 #10 0x5f30e4 in deliver_event /home/user/linux/tools/perf/builtin-top.c:1197:3 #11 0x908a72 in do_flush /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/ordered-events.c:244:9 #12 0x905fae in __ordered_events__flush /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/ordered-events.c:323:8 #13 0x9058db in ordered_events__flush /home/user/linux/tools/perf/util/ordered-events.c:341:9 #14 0x5f19b1 in process_thread /home/user/linux/tools/perf/builtin-top.c:1109:7 #15 0x7f4f6a21a298 in start_thread /usr/src/debug/glibc-2.33-16.fc34.x86_64/nptl/pthread_create.c:481:8 #16 0x7f4f697d0352 in clone ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/x86_64/clone.S:95 0x61300009add6 is located 10 bytes to the right of 332-byte region [0x61300009ac80,0x61300009adcc) allocated by thread T6 here: #0 0x4f3f7f in malloc (/home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf+0x4f3f7f) #1 0x7f4f6a0a88d9 (/lib64/libelf.so.1+0xa8d9) Thread T6 created by T0 here: #0 0x464856 in pthread_create (/home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf+0x464856) #1 0x5f06e0 in __cmd_top /home/user/linux/tools/perf/builtin-top.c:1309:6 #2 0x5ef19f in cmd_top /home/user/linux/tools/perf/builtin-top.c:1762:11 #3 0x7b28c0 in run_builtin /home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:313:11 #4 0x7b119f in handle_internal_command /home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:365:8 #5 0x7b2423 in run_argv /home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:409:2 #6 0x7b0c19 in main /home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:539:3 #7 0x7f4f696f7b74 in __libc_start_main /usr/src/debug/glibc-2.33-16.fc34.x86_64/csu/../csu/libc-start.c:332:16 SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow (/home/user/linux/tools/perf/perf+0x49875b) in StrstrCheck(void*, char*, char const*, char const*) Shadow bytes around the buggy address: 0x0c268000b560: fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 0x0c268000b570: fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 0x0c268000b580: fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 0x0c268000b590: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x0c268000b5a0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 =>0x0c268000b5b0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04[fa]fa fa fa fa fa 0x0c268000b5c0: fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x0c268000b5d0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x0c268000b5e0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x0c268000b5f0: 07 fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 0x0c268000b600: fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd fd Shadow byte legend (one shadow byte represents 8 application bytes): Addressable: 00 Partially addressable: 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 Heap left redzone: fa Freed heap region: fd Stack left redzone: f1 Stack mid redzone: f2 Stack right redzone: f3 Stack after return: f5 Stack use after scope: f8 Global redzone: f9 Global init order: f6 Poisoned by user: f7 Container overflow: fc Array cookie: ac Intra object redzone: bb ASan internal: fe Left alloca redzone: ca Right alloca redzone: cb Shadow gap: cc ==363148==ABORTING Suggested-by: Jiri Slaby <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Riccardo Mancini <[email protected]> Acked-by: Namhyung Kim <[email protected]> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <[email protected]> Cc: Fabian Hemmer <[email protected]> Cc: Ian Rogers <[email protected]> Cc: Jiri Olsa <[email protected]> Cc: Jiri Slaby <[email protected]> Cc: Mark Rutland <[email protected]> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <[email protected]> Cc: Remi Bernon <[email protected]> Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/[email protected] Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <[email protected]>

commit 41d5854 upstream. I got several memory leak reports from Asan with a simple command. It was because VDSO is not released due to the refcount. Like in __dsos_addnew_id(), it should put the refcount after adding to the list. $ perf record true [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.030 MB perf.data (10 samples) ] ================================================================= ==692599==ERROR: LeakSanitizer: detected memory leaks Direct leak of 439 byte(s) in 1 object(s) allocated from: #0 0x7fea52341037 in __interceptor_calloc ../../../../src/libsanitizer/asan/asan_malloc_linux.cpp:154 #1 0x559bce4aa8ee in dso__new_id util/dso.c:1256 #2 0x559bce59245a in __machine__addnew_vdso util/vdso.c:132 #3 0x559bce59245a in machine__findnew_vdso util/vdso.c:347 #4 0x559bce50826c in map__new util/map.c:175 #5 0x559bce503c92 in machine__process_mmap2_event util/machine.c:1787 #6 0x559bce512f6b in machines__deliver_event util/session.c:1481 #7 0x559bce515107 in perf_session__deliver_event util/session.c:1551 #8 0x559bce51d4d2 in do_flush util/ordered-events.c:244 #9 0x559bce51d4d2 in __ordered_events__flush util/ordered-events.c:323 #10 0x559bce519bea in __perf_session__process_events util/session.c:2268 #11 0x559bce519bea in perf_session__process_events util/session.c:2297 #12 0x559bce2e7a52 in process_buildids /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:1017 #13 0x559bce2e7a52 in record__finish_output /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:1234 #14 0x559bce2ed4f6 in __cmd_record /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:2026 #15 0x559bce2ed4f6 in cmd_record /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:2858 #16 0x559bce422db4 in run_builtin /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:313 #17 0x559bce2acac8 in handle_internal_command /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:365 #18 0x559bce2acac8 in run_argv /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:409 #19 0x559bce2acac8 in main /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:539 #20 0x7fea51e76d09 in __libc_start_main ../csu/libc-start.c:308 Indirect leak of 32 byte(s) in 1 object(s) allocated from: #0 0x7fea52341037 in __interceptor_calloc ../../../../src/libsanitizer/asan/asan_malloc_linux.cpp:154 #1 0x559bce520907 in nsinfo__copy util/namespaces.c:169 #2 0x559bce50821b in map__new util/map.c:168 #3 0x559bce503c92 in machine__process_mmap2_event util/machine.c:1787 #4 0x559bce512f6b in machines__deliver_event util/session.c:1481 #5 0x559bce515107 in perf_session__deliver_event util/session.c:1551 #6 0x559bce51d4d2 in do_flush util/ordered-events.c:244 #7 0x559bce51d4d2 in __ordered_events__flush util/ordered-events.c:323 #8 0x559bce519bea in __perf_session__process_events util/session.c:2268 #9 0x559bce519bea in perf_session__process_events util/session.c:2297 #10 0x559bce2e7a52 in process_buildids /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:1017 #11 0x559bce2e7a52 in record__finish_output /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:1234 #12 0x559bce2ed4f6 in __cmd_record /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:2026 #13 0x559bce2ed4f6 in cmd_record /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/builtin-record.c:2858 #14 0x559bce422db4 in run_builtin /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:313 #15 0x559bce2acac8 in handle_internal_command /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:365 #16 0x559bce2acac8 in run_argv /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:409 #17 0x559bce2acac8 in main /home/namhyung/project/linux/tools/perf/perf.c:539 #18 0x7fea51e76d09 in __libc_start_main ../csu/libc-start.c:308 SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: 471 byte(s) leaked in 2 allocation(s). Also, if you look at the commit 1fb7d06, it adds the srcline property into the struct, but not initializing it everywhere needed. Committer notes: Now I see, when using --ignore-callees=do_idle we end up here at line 2189 in add_callchain_ip(): 2181 if (al.sym != NULL) { 2182 if (perf_hpp_list.parent && !*parent && 2183 symbol__match_regex(al.sym, &parent_regex)) 2184 *parent = al.sym; 2185 else if (have_ignore_callees && root_al && 2186 symbol__match_regex(al.sym, &ignore_callees_regex)) { 2187 /* Treat this symbol as the root, 2188 forgetting its callees. */ 2189 *root_al = al; 2190 callchain_cursor_reset(cursor); 2191 } 2192 } And the al that doesn't have the ->srcline field initialized will be copied to the root_al, so then, back to: 1211 int hist_entry_iter__add(struct hist_entry_iter *iter, struct addr_location *al, 1212 int max_stack_depth, void *arg) 1213 { 1214 int err, err2; 1215 struct map *alm = NULL; 1216 1217 if (al) 1218 alm = map__get(al->map); 1219 1220 err = sample__resolve_callchain(iter->sample, &callchain_cursor, &iter->parent, 1221 iter->evsel, al, max_stack_depth); 1222 if (err) { 1223 map__put(alm); 1224 return err; 1225 } 1226 1227 err = iter->ops->prepare_entry(iter, al); 1228 if (err) 1229 goto out; 1230 1231 err = iter->ops->add_single_entry(iter, al); 1232 if (err) 1233 goto out; 1234 That al at line 1221 is what hist_entry_iter__add() (called from sample__resolve_callchain()) saw as 'root_al', and then: iter->ops->add_single_entry(iter, al); will go on with al->srcline with a bogus value, I'll add the above sequence to the cset and apply, thanks! When removing the driver module w/o bringing an interface up before the error below occurs. But enabling a different block module results in forming circular locking dependency due to shared major_names_lock mutex. The simplest fix is to call probe function without holding major_names_lock [1], but Christoph Hellwig does not like such idea. Therefore, instead of holding major_names_lock in blkdev_show(), introduce a different lock for blkdev_show() in order to break "sb_writers#$N => &p->lock => major_names_lock" dependency chain. commit 2aa3660 upstream. It is generally unsafe to call put_device() with dpm_list_mtx held, because the given device's release routine may carry out an action depending on that lock which then may deadlock, so modify the system-wide suspend and resume of devices to always drop dpm_list_mtx before calling put_device() (and adjust white space somewhat while at it). For instance, this prevents the following splat from showing up in the kernel log after a system resume in certain configurations: [ 3290.969514] ====================================================== [ 3290.969517] WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected [ 3290.969519] 5.15.0+ #2420 Tainted: G S [ 3290.969523] ------------------------------------------------------ [ 3290.969525] systemd-sleep/4553 is trying to acquire lock: [ 3290.969529] ffff888117ab1138 ((wq_completion)hci0#2){+.+.}-{0:0}, at: flush_workqueue+0x87/0x4a0 [ 3290.969554] but task is already holding lock: [ 3290.969556] ffffffff8280fca8 (dpm_list_mtx){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: dpm_resume+0x12e/0x3e0 [ 3290.969571] which lock already depends on the new lock. commit c1e6311 upstream. To clear a user buffer we cannot simply use memset, we have to use clear_user(). In the x86-64 variant of clear_user(), SMAP is properly handled via clac()+stac(). To fix, properly use clear_user() when we're dealing with a user buffer. [ Upstream commit b18cba0 ] Commit 9130b8d ("SUNRPC: allow for upcalls for the same uid but different gss service") introduced `auth` argument to __gss_find_upcall(), but in gss_pipe_downcall() it was left as NULL since it (and auth->service) was not (yet) determined. When multiple upcalls with the same uid and different service are ongoing, it could happen that __gss_find_upcall(), which returns the first match found in the pipe->in_downcall list, could not find the correct gss_msg corresponding to the downcall we are looking for. Moreover, it might return a msg which is not sent to rpc.gssd yet. We could see mount.nfs process hung in D state with multiple mount.nfs are executed in parallel. The call trace below is of CentOS 7.9 kernel-3.10.0-1160.24.1.el7.x86_64 but we observed the same hang w/ elrepo kernel-ml-6.0.7-1.el7. PID: 71258 TASK: ffff91ebd4be0000 CPU: 36 COMMAND: "mount.nfs" #0 [ffff9203ca3234f8] __schedule at ffffffffa3b8899f #1 [ffff9203ca323580] schedule at ffffffffa3b88eb9 #2 [ffff9203ca323590] gss_cred_init at ffffffffc0355818 [auth_rpcgss] #3 [ffff9203ca323658] rpcauth_lookup_credcache at ffffffffc0421ebc [sunrpc] #4 [ffff9203ca3236d8] gss_lookup_cred at ffffffffc0353633 [auth_rpcgss] #5 [ffff9203ca3236e8] rpcauth_lookupcred at ffffffffc0421581 [sunrpc] #6 [ffff9203ca323740] rpcauth_refreshcred at ffffffffc04223d3 [sunrpc] #7 [ffff9203ca3237a0] call_refresh at ffffffffc04103dc [sunrpc] #8 [ffff9203ca3237b8] __rpc_execute at ffffffffc041e1c9 [sunrpc] #9 [ffff9203ca323820] rpc_execute at ffffffffc0420a48 [sunrpc] The scenario is like this. Let's say there are two upcalls for services A and B, A -> B in pipe->in_downcall, B -> A in pipe->pipe. When rpc.gssd reads pipe to get the upcall msg corresponding to service B from pipe->pipe and then writes the response, in gss_pipe_downcall the msg corresponding to service A will be picked because only uid is used to find the msg and it is before the one for B in pipe->in_downcall. And the process waiting for the msg corresponding to service A will be woken up. Actual scheduing of that process might be after rpc.gssd processes the next msg. In rpc_pipe_generic_upcall it clears msg->errno (for A). The process is scheduled to see gss_msg->ctx == NULL and gss_msg->msg.errno == 0, therefore it cannot break the loop in gss_create_upcall and is never woken up after that. This patch adds a simple check to ensure that a msg which is not sent to rpc.gssd yet is not chosen as the matching upcall upon receiving a downcall. commit c6ec929 upstream. In Google internal bug 265639009 we've received an (as yet) unreproducible crash report from an aarch64 GKI 5.10.149-android13 running device. AFAICT the source code is at: https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/common/+/refs/tags/ASB-2022-12-05_13-5.10 The call stack is: ncm_close() -> ncm_notify() -> ncm_do_notify() with the crash at: ncm_do_notify+0x98/0x270 Code: 79000d0b b9000a6c f940012a f9400269 (b9405d4b) Which I believe disassembles to (I don't know ARM assembly, but it looks sane enough to me...): // halfword (16-bit) store presumably to event->wLength (at offset 6 of struct usb_cdc_notification) 0B 0D 00 79 strh w11, [x8, #6] // word (32-bit) store presumably to req->Length (at offset 8 of struct usb_request) 6C 0A 00 B9 str w12, [x19, #8] // x10 (NULL) was read here from offset 0 of valid pointer x9 // IMHO we're reading 'cdev->gadget' and getting NULL // gadget is indeed at offset 0 of struct usb_composite_dev 2A 01 40 F9 ldr x10, [x9] // loading req->buf pointer, which is at offset 0 of struct usb_request 69 02 40 F9 ldr x9, [x19] // x10 is null, crash, appears to be attempt to read cdev->gadget->max_speed 4B 5D 40 B9 ldr w11, [x10, #0x5c] which seems to line up with ncm_do_notify() case NCM_NOTIFY_SPEED code fragment: event->wLength = cpu_to_le16(8); req->length = NCM_STATUS_BYTECOUNT; /* SPEED_CHANGE data is up/down speeds in bits/sec */ data = req->buf + sizeof *event; data[0] = cpu_to_le32(ncm_bitrate(cdev->gadget)); My analysis of registers and NULL ptr deref crash offset (Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 000000000000005c) heavily suggests that the crash is due to 'cdev->gadget' being NULL when executing: data[0] = cpu_to_le32(ncm_bitrate(cdev->gadget)); which calls: ncm_bitrate(NULL) which then calls: gadget_is_superspeed(NULL) which reads ((struct usb_gadget *)NULL)->max_speed and hits a panic. AFAICT, if I'm counting right, the offset of max_speed is indeed 0x5C. (remember there's a GKI KABI reservation of 16 bytes in struct work_struct) It's not at all clear to me how this is all supposed to work... but returning 0 seems much better than panic-ing... [ Upstream commit 950b43f ] When the interface is brought up in monitor mode, it leads to NULL pointer dereference crash. This crash happens when the packet type is extracted for a SKB. This extraction which is present in the received msdu delivery path,is not needed for the monitor ring packets since they are all RAW packets. Hence appending the flags with "RX_FLAG_ONLY_MONITOR" to skip that extraction. For this bug, jbd2_journal_restart() is called by ocfs2_split_extent() during defragmenting. How to fix For ocfs2_split_extent() can handle journal operations totally by itself. Caller doesn't need to call journal access/dirty pair, and caller only needs to call journal start/stop pair. The fix method is to remove journal access/dirty from __ocfs2_move_extent(). [ Upstream commit 0a3f4f1 ] Backports notes: one simple conflict in net/mptcp/protocol.c with: commit f8c9dfb ("mptcp: add pm listener events") Where one commit removes code in __mptcp_close_ssk() while the other one adds one line at the same place. commit 7ff8491 upstream. Commit 6930bcb dropped the setting of the file_lock range when decoding a nlm_lock off the wire. This causes the client side grant callback to miss matching blocks and reject the lock, only to rerequest it 30s later. Add a helper function to set the file_lock range from the start and end values that the protocol uses, and have the nlm_lock decoder call that to set up the file_lock args properly. [ Upstream commit ef6e199 ] In the function ieee80211_tx_dequeue() there is a particular locking sequence: begin: spin_lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); q_stopped = local->queue_stop_reasons[q]; spin_unlock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); However small the chance (increased by ftracetest), an asynchronous interrupt can occur in between of spin_lock() and spin_unlock(), and the interrupt routine will attempt to lock the same &local->queue_stop_reason_lock again. This will cause a costly reset of the CPU and the wifi device or an altogether hang in the single CPU and single core scenario. The only remaining spin_lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock) that did not disable interrupts was patched, which should prevent any deadlocks on the same CPU/core and the same wifi device. This is the probable trace of the deadlock: kernel: ================================ kernel: WARNING: inconsistent lock state kernel: 6.3.0-rc6-mt-20230401-00001-gf86822a1170f #4 Tainted: G W kernel: -------------------------------- kernel: inconsistent {IN-SOFTIRQ-W} -> {SOFTIRQ-ON-W} usage. kernel: kworker/5:0/25656 [HC0[0]:SC0[0]:HE1:SE1] takes: kernel: ffff9d6190779478 (&local->queue_stop_reason_lock){+.?.}-{2:2}, at: return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: {IN-SOFTIRQ-W} state was registered at: kernel: lock_acquire+0xc7/0x2d0 kernel: _raw_spin_lock+0x36/0x50 kernel: ieee80211_tx_dequeue+0xb4/0x1330 [mac80211] kernel: iwl_mvm_mac_itxq_xmit+0xae/0x210 [iwlmvm] kernel: iwl_mvm_mac_wake_tx_queue+0x2d/0xd0 [iwlmvm] kernel: ieee80211_queue_skb+0x450/0x730 [mac80211] kernel: __ieee80211_xmit_fast.constprop.66+0x834/0xa50 [mac80211] kernel: __ieee80211_subif_start_xmit+0x217/0x530 [mac80211] kernel: ieee80211_subif_start_xmit+0x60/0x580 [mac80211] kernel: dev_hard_start_xmit+0xb5/0x260 kernel: __dev_queue_xmit+0xdbe/0x1200 kernel: neigh_resolve_output+0x166/0x260 kernel: ip_finish_output2+0x216/0xb80 kernel: __ip_finish_output+0x2a4/0x4d0 kernel: ip_finish_output+0x2d/0xd0 kernel: ip_output+0x82/0x2b0 kernel: ip_local_out+0xec/0x110 kernel: igmpv3_sendpack+0x5c/0x90 kernel: igmp_ifc_timer_expire+0x26e/0x4e0 kernel: call_timer_fn+0xa5/0x230 kernel: run_timer_softirq+0x27f/0x550 kernel: __do_softirq+0xb4/0x3a4 kernel: irq_exit_rcu+0x9b/0xc0 kernel: sysvec_apic_timer_interrupt+0x80/0xa0 kernel: asm_sysvec_apic_timer_interrupt+0x1f/0x30 kernel: _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x3f/0x70 kernel: free_to_partial_list+0x3d6/0x590 kernel: __slab_free+0x1b7/0x310 kernel: kmem_cache_free+0x52d/0x550 kernel: putname+0x5d/0x70 kernel: do_sys_openat2+0x1d7/0x310 kernel: do_sys_open+0x51/0x80 kernel: __x64_sys_openat+0x24/0x30 kernel: do_syscall_64+0x5c/0x90 kernel: entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x72/0xdc kernel: irq event stamp: 5120729 kernel: hardirqs last enabled at (5120729): [<ffffffff9d149936>] trace_graph_return+0xd6/0x120 kernel: hardirqs last disabled at (5120728): [<ffffffff9d149950>] trace_graph_return+0xf0/0x120 kernel: softirqs last enabled at (5069900): [<ffffffff9cf65b60>] return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: softirqs last disabled at (5067555): [<ffffffff9cf65b60>] return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: other info that might help us debug this: kernel: Possible unsafe locking scenario: kernel: CPU0 kernel: ---- kernel: lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); kernel: <Interrupt> kernel: lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); kernel: *** DEADLOCK *** kernel: 8 locks held by kworker/5:0/25656: kernel: #0: ffff9d618009d138 ((wq_completion)events_freezable){+.+.}-{0:0}, at: process_one_work+0x1ca/0x530 kernel: #1: ffffb1ef4637fe68 ((work_completion)(&local->restart_work)){+.+.}-{0:0}, at: process_one_work+0x1ce/0x530 kernel: #2: ffffffff9f166548 (rtnl_mutex){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: #3: ffff9d6190778728 (&rdev->wiphy.mtx){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: #4: ffff9d619077b480 (&mvm->mutex){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: #5: ffff9d61907bacd8 (&trans_pcie->mutex){+.+.}-{3:3}, at: return_to_handler+0x0/0x40 kernel: #6: ffffffff9ef9cda0 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: iwl_mvm_queue_state_change+0x59/0x3a0 [iwlmvm] kernel: #7: ffffffff9ef9cda0 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: iwl_mvm_mac_itxq_xmit+0x42/0x210 [iwlmvm] kernel: stack backtrace: kernel: CPU: 5 PID: 25656 Comm: kworker/5:0 Tainted: G W 6.3.0-rc6-mt-20230401-00001-gf86822a1170f #4 kernel: Hardware name: LENOVO 82H8/LNVNB161216, BIOS GGCN51WW 11/16/2022 kernel: Workqueue: events_freezable ieee80211_restart_work [mac80211] kernel: Call Trace: kernel: <TASK> kernel: ? [ Upstream commit b684c09 ] ppc_save_regs() skips one stack frame while saving the CPU register states. Instead of saving current R1, it pulls the previous stack frame pointer. When vmcores caused by direct panic call (such as `echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger`), are debugged with gdb, gdb fails to show the backtrace correctly. On further analysis, it was found that it was because of mismatch between r1 and NIP. GDB uses NIP to get current function symbol and uses corresponding debug info of that function to unwind previous frames, but due to the mismatching r1 and NIP, the unwinding does not work, and it fails to unwind to the 2nd frame and hence does not show the backtrace. GDB backtrace with vmcore of kernel without this patch: --------- (gdb) bt #0 0xc0000000002a53e8 in crash_setup_regs (oldregs=<optimized out>, newregs=0xc000000004f8f8d8) at ./arch/powerpc/include/asm/kexec.h:69 #1 __crash_kexec (regs=<optimized out>) at kernel/kexec_core.c:974 #2 0x0000000000000063 in ?? () #3 0xc000000003579320 in ?? () --------- Further analysis revealed that the mismatch occurred because "ppc_save_regs" was saving the previous stack's SP instead of the current r1. Furthermore it's still possible that the caller has not yet called wait_for_completion, resulting in another potential UAF. So the nfs4_copy_state address ffff0100f98fa3f0 was offset by 0x10 and the data accessed through this pointer was also incorrect. Generally, the ordered list nfs4_state_owner->so_states indicate open(O_RDWR) or open(O_WRITE) states are reclaimed firstly by nfs4_reclaim_open_state(). When destination state reclaim is failed with NFS_STATE_RECOVERY_FAILED and copies are not deleted in nfs_server->ss_copies, the source state may be passed to the nfs42_complete_copies() process earlier, resulting in this crash scene finally. Specifically, if there is a lot of traffic on Rx direction, when XDP_REDIRECT is turned on, the console may display some warnings like "timeout for tx ring #6 clear", and all redirected frames will be dropped, the detailed log is as follows. root@ls1028ardb:~# ./xdp-bench redirect eno0 eno2 Redirecting from eno0 (ifindex 3; driver fsl_enetc) to eno2 (ifindex 4; driver fsl_enetc) [203.849809] fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #5 clear [204.006051] fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #6 clear [204.161944] fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #7 clear eno0->eno2 1420505 rx/s 1420590 err,drop/s 0 xmit/s xmit eno0->eno2 0 xmit/s 1420590 drop/s 0 drv_err/s 15.71 bulk-avg eno0->eno2 1420484 rx/s 1420485 err,drop/s 0 xmit/s xmit eno0->eno2 0 xmit/s 1420485 drop/s 0 drv_err/s 15.71 bulk-avg By analyzing the XDP_REDIRECT implementation of enetc driver, the driver will reconfigure Tx and Rx BD rings when a bpf program is installed or uninstalled, but there is no mechanisms to block the redirected frames when enetc driver reconfigures rings. Similarly, XDP_TX verdicts on received frames can also lead to frames being enqueued in the Tx rings. Because XDP ignores the state set by the netif_tx_wake_queue() API, so introduce the ENETC_TX_DOWN flag to suppress transmission of XDP frames. The Tx BD rings are disabled first in enetc_stop() and the driver waits for them to become empty. This operation is not safe while the ring is actively transmitting frames, and will cause the ring to not be empty and hardware exception. As described in the NETC block guide, software should only disable an active Tx ring after all pending ring entries have been consumed (i.e. when PI = CI). Disabling a transmit ring that is actively processing BDs risks a HW-SW race hazard whereby a hardware resource becomes assigned to work on one or more ring entries only to have those entries be removed due to the ring becoming disabled. When testing XDP_REDIRECT feautre, although all frames were blocked from being put into Tx rings during ring reconfiguration, the similar warning log was still encountered: fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #6 clear fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #7 clear The reason is that when there are still unsent frames in the Tx ring, disabling the Tx ring causes the remaining frames to be unable to be sent out. And the Tx ring cannot be restored, which means that even if the xdp program is uninstalled, the Tx frames cannot be sent out anymore. Therefore, correct the operation order in enect_start() and enect_stop(). towards the in-kernel listener created by the in-kernel PM for a port based signal endpoint. Such connection will be never accepted; many of them can make the listener queue full and preventing the creation of MPJ subflow via such listener - its intended role. This patch simply fills ndo_start_xmit() in netdev and no other
operations.
In the ipv6 network, after the date is sent, the netdev ndo_start_xmit()
hook will be called. But s10ssi does not fill the ndo_start_xmit() in
netdev, so it will case a "NULL pointer" crash.
In the ipv6 network, run the following command:
$ ifconfig s10hssi0 up
Will cause the machine to crash:
