Every game I have tested so far has lead me to some SSD activity and then s black screen, followed by a manual reset. Is there something wrong with my drive?

Do you have a USB drive or MX4SIO connected to your PS2? If so remove them, then try launching a game again.

If that doesn't resolve the problem then post the game-installer.log here and I'll take a look.

I do not own an MX4SIO, nor have I any USB drives plugged into the PS2. All I have are the SSD, Ethernet cable, 2 Memory Cards of which I've deleted the old OPL configs for, and 2 Dualshock 2's. Not only that, setting BDM Start Mode on and to HDD doesn't make my games show up. I've tried formatting the drive to GPT, but all it showed in "Collection" was corrupt data.

Looks like the game install went okay. I've added a lot more error handling recently to the PSBBN installer script. I recommend updating to the latest version with git pull or clone the repository again if necessary, then run the PSBBN installer script again. If you still have issues after that give me the PSBBN-installer.log so I can take a look.

The screen is still black after a full delete, git clone, git pull and reinstall of PSBBN on the SSD (along with Sakura Wars V Disc 2). These are both the game installer and PSBBN installer logs, if that helps. Also, my SSD is formatted to exFAT, MBR (rather than GPT), and default allocation size.

Doesn't look like there is anything wrong with the PSBBN install or the game install. It must be an OPL issue. Try launching the games directly with OPL. Make sure you enable the HDD under BDM Devices in the OPL settings:

Try multiple games to make sure it is not an isolated issue with just one game.

I've had the normal OPL installed in the past (it's configs are deleted now) with no issues on this same SSD.

@CosmicScale

That confirms it's an OPL issue. You're the 3rd person to have this problem and the solution for them was to use a different HDD/SSD...

But let's do a little more troubleshooting. Can you put the drive in your PC, format it as exFAT, copy the games to a DVD or CD folder and try OPL again without PSBBN?

Boot the console with FreeMCBoot, and launch the version of OPNPS2LD.ELF from this repository. It's too big to fit on a memory card so you'll have to put it on a USB thumb drive.

Let me know if the games show up in OPL after that.

Having done some research after testing both the A400 and a samsung 850 evo, people have said it's the drives' manufacturer firmware conflicting with the SCE HDD commands.

@joenuts690

I will try that later on. Is there anything different I need to do for this specific version of OPL? I use FreeHDBoot with the same SSD as I have done before this installation, with a __mbr.raw having been written to it in the past during the first installation of FreeHDBoot. I don't own a FMCB memory card.

It could just be how ps2sdk handles the ATA commands I'm not sure but yeah it sucks when you've got no clue as to what drives will work fine and what drives won't.

Apparently NHDDL + Neutrino works? (I'll have to test it)
But with this project using OPL we're kinda stuck the current stage unless you luck out with a working drive or the sdk gets some sort of workaround.

In that case you would have to install FreeHDBoot then make a FreeMCBoot card.

It's strange, I have this running on a Kingston A400 240G and a Kingston A400 960G with no issues. Guess I'll have to stop recommending the A400 now. Perhaps there's been a recent change in their firmware.

It would be good if you can try Neutrino to see if your drive works with it. In the new year I plan to add Neutrino as an option.

It does seem that the amount of incompatible drives is minimal. I think only 3 people have reported problems. I'll add a note to the readme about incompatible drives.

Hi, I have the same issue with my Seagate 2TB hard drive. It worked fine when I originally had FreeMcBoot and OPL installed, however, with PSBBN, any game I launch from Collection just goes to a black screen (PS1 & PS2). They do all show up in Collection, however, when I launch an "empty" game slot and loading OPL, none of my games show up there, even with BDM devices and HDD on as suggested above.

Also if I press Triangle on any game within Collection, they all show as only 128MB in size, is this normal or is this an issue with my hard drive causing this?

Is there anything I could try to get this to work with my hard drive or would I have to buy another? If so, which one should I go for, as from comments above the A400 is not working either? Many thanks and I hope you have a fantastic Christmas!! 😊

EDIT: Just to add, I installed around 50 games in total, so I went through every single one, and 2 of my PS1 games worked, Wu Tang Shaolin Style & Apocalypse, not sure how or why , but nothing else worked. Just thought I'd let you know.

This is normal. Those partitions are just "Launcher" partitions; the PS2 and PS1 games are stored on the exFAT partition and the __.POPS partition respectively.

Is there anything I could try to get this to work with my hard drive or would I have to buy another? If so, which one should I go for

You could try a different method of connecting the drive to your PC. I would highly recommend a direct SATA connection. I can't recommend any particular drives but from the small number of reports it seems that most drives are compatible.

EDIT: Just to add, I installed around 50 games in total, so I went through every single one, and 2 of my PS1 games worked

PS1 games not booting is a completely different issue from PS2 games not booting. Drive compatibility is not the issue. It could be a number of things:

  1. Not all games are supported by the POPS emulator but a vast majority are.
  2. Most PS1 games display in 240p so it could be that your display does not support that resolution.
  3. There could be a problem with your VCD files.

For anyone experiencing issues launching PS2 games, I recommend trying the Neutrino Launcher NHDDL.

  1. Install PSBBN and some games.
  2. Install Neutrino and NHDDL onto a memory card.
  3. Check if the games appear in the NHDDL games list and if they launch.
  4. Report back here.

If the games work with Neutrino, I'll start working on a Neutrino-based launcher for PSBBN.

Hi, I am having the same issue with both CD / DVD PS2 games, after I launch them, black screen, but I am able to boot my PS1 games. I have tested some, and found some texture bugs, for example on Gran Turismo 2 all the cars textures are black and on Driver 2, the load game menu textures are also buggy (any advice to fix this texture bug?).

Ive tested the newer OPL version for the PS2 games and it does the same. I also did try launching the games directly from OPL with the recommended settings and the games doesn't show up on game list. I noticed the newer OPL file Ive used its size is 1.3mb and the old one is around 10mb, so i will need to test with the newer version that have PADEMU and Extra features on it (I think its the one used before?).

extra question: Before i connect my SSD on linux and install PSBBN, I did format it on Win10 and made it with MBR as partition style, and my question is: is there any difference / problem to use either a GPT or MBR partition?

Info: PS2 Fat Silver SCPH-50004 (European) / Original Network adapter+Sata board by bitfunx / SSD MSI Spatium S270 240gb

Extra Info: All my games/iso are European versions created with my own discs, at low speed (2x / 4x) to replicate both PS disc drive speed to be sure the discs are OK (I am giving this information just in case this end to be a image/backup problem). Big thx!

I am able to boot my PS1 games. I have tested some, and found some texture bugs

PSBBN uses POPStarter and the POPS emulator for PS1 games. Compatibility is not perfect. You might be able to find help online for specific games.

I noticed the newer OPL file Ive used its size is 1.3mb and the old one is around 10mb

The version included with this project is not compressed, this speeds up boot times.

extra question: Before i connect my SSD on linux and install PSBBN, I did format it on Win10 and made it with MBR as partition style, and my question is: is there any difference / problem to use either a GPT or MBR partition?

No, the PSBBN installer wipes the drive and uses MBR.

What I would like you to do:

  1. Run the following command and tell me the PHY-SEC and LOG-SEC of your drive:
lsblk -p -o MODEL,NAME,PHY-SEC,LOG-SEC
  1. Try using the Neutrino Launcher NHDDL for PS2 games

Hello! I want to share all the information I have gathered in the past days. Some might be irrelevant but... we never know.

At the beginning I was using a Oracle VM with Linux Mint Cinnamon installed, to do the PSBBN setup to my MSI SSD connected by USB, but I had to scrap all this because I had almost lost my external HDD and all its data from the connect / disconnect from windows to the virtual machine (windows had lost the permissions to access to the drive somehow).

So I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on an old computer I had, and connected the MSI SSD directly. I installed the Git feature to download the PSBBN (sudo apt install git), and I also installed the updates Linux had available to download. I did all the PSBBN installation and I got no errors. I was able to run it on the PS2, I checked the Konami link and it was working, Ive also downloaded the MGS3 video. The game list was completed, with both PS2 and PS1 games, but only the PS1 games were able to start, both CD / DVD PS2 games went to Black Screen. Opening the OPL launcher didnt show the games list even with the recommended settings previously stated. Ive also tested the last OPL build (v1.2.0-Beta-2197-d5e0998) by placing it on +OPL folder, still do the same.

And last, Ive tried to use NHDDL (Ive installed the Standalone version on my Memory card) and it worked. It listed all the PS2 games I had on my SSD, without I do any change, and I was able to play both CD/DVD and DVD-DL games.

My SSD PHY-SEC and LOG-SEC are both 512

This is great news, as I plan to make a Neutrino Launcher for PSBBN. You could also try Grimdoomer's OPL, apparently that works too. It seems the issue is just a bug with the current build of OPL. No idea why it only affects certain drives.

Please report problems with OPL to the official repository. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon.

Hey, thanks for your work on this as always. I wanted to submit a fuller report here and include my logs in case it's of any value.

I've done a few installs today and I'm not able to launch into games at all atm. No memory cards are inserted into my PS2. No ethernet cable is attached at all. (Does that make a difference for game launching?) Using official network adapter with SATA adapter mod installed into it.

First, I tried doing an update to my first installation to see if that would help with launching - no dice, games boot to black screen. Tried a CD PS2 game, DVD PS2 game and a PS1 game - all black screens. Saw the HDD activity light flash and the image flicker on my CRT like it was switching resolutions to start, but no dice.

I tried doing a clean install using just your content here and from the installer script itself (so, "stock" OPL) - games showed up in PSBBN, but all black screens still. Booting directly into OPL and no games are recognized in OPL.

I saw your suggestions about OPL versions and what I did is get that beta OPL from their git page and replaced the ELF file for OPL in the assets folder with that and did a clean install from there and installed games again. This time all the PSBBN game entries showed up as corrupt data, though the number of entries corresponded to the number of games I had to install. OPL still did not see games off the bat, couldn't launch games from PSBBN or OPL.

If I could ask, what is meant by using the Neutrino launcher? I am not so familiar with everything in the PS2 scene, but I'd like to try it since it worked for the person above it seems.

These logs are from my last attempt at plugging that newer beta OPL version's ELF file into the psbbn folder on my PC before doing the installation. It was named the same as the included/downloaded OPL ELF file.

Any tips are appreciated, but if it's just a matter of waiting for more OPL updates or just calling my drive bad, whatever works for you. Does anyone have a list of new, purchasable drives that work well here? Thanks again for everything!!!

I can't see anything in the logs that would cause this. Perhaps something when wrong when you replaced the file.

If I could ask, what is meant by using the Neutrino launcher?

Neutrino is a newer, alternative way of loading game ISOs on PS2 and could be used as a replacement for OPL.

Any tips are appreciated, but if it's just a matter of waiting for more OPL updates or just calling my drive bad, whatever works for you. Does anyone have a list of new, purchasable drives that work well here?

I can’t recommend specific drives because the same drive has worked for some but not for others. The issue appears to be isolated to the latest builds of OPL. However, Neutrino and Grimdoomer’s older OPL build with exFAT support have been shown to work on affected drives, suggesting that a fix is possible. For now, here are three options:

  1. Try a different drive. Most drives appear to be supported
  2. Wait for the bug to be fixed with OPL
  3. Wait for me to create a Neutrino launcher compatible with PSBBN

Again, If anyone is experiencing issues with OPL not listing games, update to the latest version here. If the problem persists, please report it here.

I'm thinking OPL corrupts the exfat partition and/or the partition table. If you launch OPL, get nothing, and then plug the hard drive back into your PC and try to run 'dump.exfat /dev/sdxy' on the partition you'll see the filesystem label has become mangled and you'll get an error about a missing filesystem bitmap. Which I think would also explain why OPL will be able to recognize a GPT partition exists on the first launch but not find anything afterward.

Tried it with four different drives (SSD and HDD) and got the same result.

This is the first time anybody has reported a corrupt drive. Looks like it's an isolated issue and not in any way related to the problems others are having.

Tried it with four different drives (SSD and HDD) and got the same result.

I am 99% sure it is a hardware issue. If the drive only becomes corrupted after connecting to the PS2, it could be an issue with the network adapter's SATA mod. You could also try connecting the drive to your PC with a different SATA to USB adapter, or preferably directly to a SATA connection on the motherboard.

I've tried with three different USB-SATA adapters. It' odd because if I use the drive using the old method, with an +OPL partition and then transfering games using the PSF batch kit it all works fine without any kind of corruption. It seems to only happen when trying to use GPT and exfat that it all goes wrong.

I might try sourcing another adapter and SATA modkit and trying if that works any better but I'm not too optimistic.

but Neutrino and NHDDL did work after installing them on my memory card so I would support a Neutrino loader for the game partitions

EDIT: i will try to setup the drive again from scratch with a live system and see if that solves my issue

Download OPNPS2LD.7z from here. Extract the files. Rename the .ELF to OPNPS2LD.ELF. You then have 2 options:

  1. Put the file on a USB stick, plug it into your PS2 and use wLaunchELF to copy the file to the +OPL partition

I also have this issue. Tried with OPL that came packaged with this git and the most recent version of the official build (which currently has an annoying bug where controller input just dies while navigating the menus.) Same issue with black screens while booting any PS2 game, CD/DVD. OPL also doesn't boot from the game channel either, I have to launch it directly via wLaunchElf.

It seems so close to working too. I have a MemCardPro 2 and it loads/creates VMCs for any game I try to launch just fine. The games just simply hang right at boot. I haven't tested Neutrino, but Grimdoomer's OPL works perfectly fine so I'm sure it would work as well.

Seems pretty much an OPL specific issue as I recently tried today without an HDD inserted and either got OPL booting into its GUI without being able to control it or (if no config exists) a black screen.

As of right now I have Standalone NHDDL as a Kelf as an application partition (to boot from PSBBN) and Neutrino on my memory card to access my games in the exfat portion of the APA-Jail. Hope the OPL issues get resolved soon or work on an OPL-Launcher style executable for Neutrino gets started

Unfortunately I need to wait on them to release another update for the beta branch. My inputs keep dying in OPL's menu so I can't actually enable the HDD, therefore I have no idea if my games will list in the latest OPL beta or not. On top of that, I managed to enable and save the settings before my inputs cut out twice, but both times lead to the save failing. First time it tried to save to mass (I have no USBs plugged in), second time it just said it failed to write settings. I'm stuck until something gets updated unfortunately.

On the positive side of things, this is my first time experiencing the BBN and it's really fantastic. Ironically I purchased my PS2 from Japan last year. Midnight Blue model with the HDD and BBN. That was my first time learning about the existence of the BBN. I thought to myself if anyone possibly translated the experience, and now here we are. Thanks for all your hard work with this.

I wasn't having this issue until I pulled down 2.01 tho. I've installed PSBBN 2.0 up until right before that update, and had no OPL issues with the same SSD......

The 2.01 update changes the USB keyboard to US English layout and corrects a misspelling. Nothing else.

UPDATE: From a report on the OPL GitHub it appears the issue might be related to certain SATA mods not playing nice with certain drives. I have the official Sony Network Adapter, a Kaico SATA mod and a number of Kingston A400 SSDs and they all work for me. Some have reported that the Kingston A400 SSDs haven't worked for them, this leads me to believe it most likely is the SATA mod causing the issues. I've noticed a number of people have mentioned they are using the Bitfunx SATA mod and experience this issue.

This bug is however, isolated to OPL. I hope a fix can be found soon. I will start work on a Neutrino launcher in the near future and that will also be an option for people experiencing this issue.

Hello :) I'm having the same issue and I thought I'd post my hardware just in case it's helpful.

I noticed that when you launch a PS1 game, after the screen goes No Signal, you can press L1, Start and Select and the menu will still pop up! ... Probably doesn't help this situation, but finding it made me feel smart lol

Console:
I can't remember the exact model number but its a phat PAL model and it starts with a 50....

Adapter:
Bitfunx SATA Adapter Upgrade Board for SONY Playstation 2 PS2 IDE Original Network Adapter

SSD:
Samsung 860 QVO MZ-76Q1T0BW 1TB 2.5" Internal SSD V-NAND

Im going to try another SSD tomorrow from a different brand and see if it helps

Most PS1 games run at 240p and your TV doesn't support that resolution, this is the reason for the "No Signal" message. You have a few options:

  1. Use a composite cable to connect the PS2 to your TV
  2. If you are using a HDMI adapter, look into getting a different one that upscales 240p content
  3. If you are using a component cable, look into getting a video scaler like the OSSC
  4. Use a different TV

Never mind, turns out I was not experiencing a PSBBN issue at all. I had a dud broadband adapter and/or bitfunx SATA mod. I had another SATA-modded adapter ready and when I switched to that, everything worked.
