I'm gonna have to use my my jurisdiction has head spriter here - this sprite is a downgrade from the original.
Feel free to change the description, names and add emissives, but I will not permit a change on the original sprite.
Could you elaborate your reasons for denying modifications on that sprite or why it is a downgrade in your opinion? Respectfully, i haven't met single a paramedic yet that remotely expressed liking to the original sprite. |
Please see the PR summary.
Yes, i used the generic helmet. Example: The old sprite, especially with the ear protection curvatures, looks very very much like an actual swat helmet:
I have added the description not because i think the new version feels like combat gear, but because i still had the old sprite in my head, which feels like combat gear.
Ironically, i think the generic helm even looks less combat related than the current paramedic helmet sprite. |
To confirm my point: Shortly after my PR got posted on discord, somebody thought i changed the helmet to an hardhat - There is the proof that people thought the previous sprite was indeed an armored helmet and the newer version looks lighter. I've also collected some feedback before i opened the PR. |
Look, I'm not going to argue semantics here - we've learnt from the Medical Chemical Names discussion that realism is incompatible with gameplay, so I'm not going to entertain the real-life comparisons here as well. For the feedback, I'm going to give benefit of the doubt and take it at face value : Paramedics don't like the helmet. True, but they didn't like the old one either. Namely because other options like caps and showing off your hair are simply more popular. As for the "Is this combat or hardhat", it's purely subjective. But for me, it's based on existing conventions. It looks like the security helmet. Therefore, it looks like it's used for combat. The existing sprite looks big and bulkly. The hardhats are also big and bulky. Therefore, it is a hardhat. And now, as feedback is important to you, is my personal feedback on the sprite. Fundementally, as a sprite, it's very amateurish - please read the sprite guide on the forums to understand my thought process. And on a more important note - this is just a straight-up unintentional reversion to the pre-resprite version, if you look through the file history. I'm not going to allow what is basically a cyclical resprite back to the 2010s. I'm not going to allow this server's artstyle to be stuck in the past any longer. |
I agree with Wezzy, this would need to either not touch the sprite, or provide a better one than what we currently have |
I wasn't trying to pull semantics on anyone. I'm also unaware of the discussion you are referring to.
I certainly do not expect you to come up with sprites that suits every type of loadout, artstyle or others.
I understand your argument, but must mention that this view doesn't seem to be what others players think about the helmet. The issue was the reason for me to try to present an alternative.
It is indeed amateurish because this is the first time i have edited a sprite and i think for a basic reskin i don't think it's to shabby. I sadly am not sure what i could've done differently, even with the guide on hand. Perhaps that is my issue without experience in the matter.
I wasn't aware of such an historical issue with art. This is my first sprite contribution, or attempt rather. After further consideration i understand that you see no value in using the generic helmet as an alternative. I might try something else in the future if i find the motivation for it after this discussion.
It would be very valuable for any [newer] contributor when you pull the jurisdiction card to elaborate on your thoughts instead of calling it a simple downgrade. It helps people to understand the direction you like to see in relation to the work presented. We could've saved us the semantics discussion too. Thank you for your time. |
Summary
This PR reworks the paramedic helmet. The intent is to modernize the rather outdated and rather unfavored current version of the paramedic helmet. Besides the icon update, it also has been renamed to hardhat and it's description has been updated to emphasize the fact that it's a hardhat, not an armored helmet. Part of the icon rework is the addition of emissives.
The new design is heavily inspired by the generic security helmet as i found it to be the most generic helmet, with the smallest area to fit the hardhat style. It is also inspired by todays modern hardhats seen in emergency services. All icons have been made by myself and are based of existing designs in the game.
Additionally this PR contains a typo-fix for the hydraulic rescue tool.
