Sending ampersand (&) gives stream error

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start iChabber, click on a friend, click Reply
2. Enter a message containing a '&' character, click Send
3. A Stream error appears, and you have to logout and login again to
continue - and the message was not sent.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

The expected output was that the message was sent (probably correctly
escaped) and the connection was still functional. The output given was a
Stream error, message not sent and a non-functional connection.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

r38 on an iPod Touch with v1.1.1 of the software - connecting to ejabberd.
