both 1.3 and 1.4 do not open on my windows 11 install. After extracting and double clicking, smart screen pops up and I allow it to run. THen, nothing happens. Tried win8 compatibility mode with no luck.

v22000.795 (21H2)

Not sure what you mean by "smart screen". Unfortunately, it works fine on my end...

Smart screen is a Windows function to verify the "reputation" of an application.

But I’ve spent years cultivating my disrepute!

Got it. I think I have a bookmark somewhere for this, but it may take a bit on Microsoft’s end to process.

I tried putting v1.4 and v1.0.1 in c:/temp and running. V1.0.1 runs fine but anything newer just doesn't do anything after I "allow" through smart screen.

I dont think smart screen is the cause though.

Are you running the same win11 version I am?

If you go into Windows Security, then Virus & Threat Protection, and then Protection History, do you see anything?

I'm pretty sure the issue is with some kind of security feature -- you can take a look at #2 if you're curious. I have a request out to Microsoft to review/stop flagging BrewFlasher 1.4 - we'll see what they come back with.

Per Microsoft:

The warning you experienced indicates that the application had not established reputation with the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen Application Reputation feature at that time. We can confirm that the application %brewflasher-1.4 x64.exe%(sha256 - 813b2580a70518d16bd9b005d06111864d4bd0da1de582da0f072b5b4b658853) has since established reputation and attempting to download or run the application should no longer show any warnings.

Should work now, assuming that the cache updated.

I have no issues on my insider's win11 build, which is less likely to work than the release build.

The flashing only fails due to me not having a unit attached to the PC but it pulls the download and such fine.
I suspect it is not explicitly a win11 thing. Are you running anti virus over and above 'Windows Security' ? That could be blocking it.

Ironically, this screenshot actually shows that there is an unrelated bug in the Windows version -- esptool should be v3.3, not 4.1. :(

ARGH!

The same is true of version 1.3 btw.

BrewFlasher 1.5.1 has now been released and has been tested with Windows 11 as best I can test it. Smart Screen shows it as "unknown" for now, but it flashes as expected when that message is clicked through and works well.

Going to close this issue as a result -- if there are further issues with Windows please open a new issue and I will take a look.

I downloaded and ran to offer some positive telemetry to SmartScreen

I don't care what everyone else says about you, I think you're a damn saint, @uSlackr
