The CarBrand example could be mapped to/from the following XSD union snippet:

<simpleType name="knownCarbrands">
    <restriction base="string">
        <enumeration value="Tesla"/>
        <enumeration value="Aston Martin"/>
        ....
    </restriction>
</simpleType>
<simpleType name="otherCarbrand">
    <restriction base="string"/>
</simpleType>

<simpleType name="carbrand">
    <union memberTypes="knownCarbrands otherCarbrand" />
</simpleType>
