Failing to run simple code

When running rawact with this simple code, it fails with an error:

import ReactDOM from 'react-dom'                           
                                                           
function App() {                                           
  return null                                              
}                                                          
                                                           
ReactDOM.render(                                           
  <App />,                                                 
  document.getElementById('root')                          
)                                                          

The root div is definitely there.

Looks like it's the return null that is failing. If I return an empty div, it works.
