Just curious if anyone has any ideas on this. I left a fake airtag in a rural area about 24 hours ago. I thought it'd be interesting to track the temperature, and get a rough idea of passing foot traffic (it's a spot I like to camp).
In the morning while having my morning brew, about half a dozen hikers or runners went by - some within about 5 metres, others maybe 20 metres (although there's no other 2.4GHz traffic here so probably in range). There were more cars parking up as I left.
Despite this the airtag hasn't had a single location report since I left the road. Given iPhone is about 50% here, I'd say at least a couple went by just in the time I was there.
Curious if anyone has ever seen similar - i.e. whether there's some sort of logic that prevents reports in rural areas. There is cell signal but no WiFi so I guess the phone would need GPS position. Or have I just overestimated the range? Comparatively, the tags in my house seem to be picked up very frequently by neighbours and passing traffic
