Many of us can think of an intersection in our towns and cities where traffic feels unsafe. The impact of unsafe roads is felt by every road user, from drivers, bikers, and pedestrians. Every year, there are more than 30,000 traffic fatalities in the United States. Several of those fatalities might happen this year at the intersections close to our homes, areas we assume to be safe.
People are already engaged in improving infrastructure and can create safer intersections more quickly if they have access to affordable traffic data.
This is where the Santos Platform can make change. This cloud-based software platform provides safety metrics from visual traffic data to those who are concerned with traffic safety. Continue reading below to learn more about the software, or start using it by
- collecting video or
- installing the components on your computer.
If you are a developer interested in this open-source project, you can
- visit our page for developers or
- meetup in person during Code For Boston's Hack Nights if you are located in the Boston or Cambridge area.
As well, we have a number of pilot programs starting in the general Boston area. If you are interested in getting involved,
- [reach out](mailto:{{ site.email }}) to get a project started or
- read about our other studies and where we are heading.
Our software works with video footage recorded through many different devices. All someone needs is to start recording from a good vantage point to completely see the whole intersection.
Concerned citizens and city officials can start conversations about improving roads with quantitative evidence.
Safety reports can be shared easily amongst citizens and city officials.
Near-collision events are more frequent and their analysis is more useful than actual crash statistics in detecting systemic safety problems.
