Are you referring to the one GitLab provides or are you referring to the older runners?

If you are referring to using this repo instead of GitLab; more environment variables as well as being simpler to get up and going.
If you are referring to the older runners, then that's just what GitLab is recommending as their new runners work with the newer versions of GitLab.
