Some recent cool work done on evaluating topic models & extending LDA with "word group" correlations:
http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ynhu/publications/mlj2013_itm.pdf

It's based on gibbs sampling (like MALLET's "sparse bucket sampling") and contains many interesting experiments.
