I would like to start this discussion to introduce myself as a newcomer in this community.
If it is not the right place or the right category for this type of discussion, please let me know.
I am Antonin Jolivat, a 20 (close to 21) years old French student studying computer science in an engineering school in France. I discovered the GSoC earlier this month and I found it very great. I never really contributed to any open source project but it this something that I planned to start doing this year. GSoC is a perfect opportunity for me to start doing so with a concrete goal at the same time!
As soon as I saw OSM as an organization for the GSoC I knew I would like to work on it. The reason is that I already used OSM before (very casually I assume) and GIS software have always intrigued and interested me, so again it is a very nice opportunity to start working on it!
I know it will be difficult at first for me since I am just starting, the codebase is quite huge and not easy to tackle (and all the OSM system too). However, I am really motivated and I want to try my best and not give up 😄.
I have started by reading the "GSoC 2021 Nominatim Projects" wrote by Lonvia on the wiki. About this point, I would like to apologize for my first mistake on the issue #2203, it gives the impression that I came without looking at what was prepared for us (wiki for newcomers) and I don't like that, I am sorry.
Anyway, apart from that, I started by going deeper into OSM overall last week and started to do some easy mapping last Sunday, it was very nice! After that I tackled the Nomatim wiki and codebase and I have setup a local working installation.
My goal for the upcomings days is to keep learning and resolve #2203 sucessfully, I would also like to do more mapping since it is very funny 😄. Depending on time left before 29th march I would also like to do another PR maybe, and discuss about projects, currently the one that caught my eyes is #1847, but I will dive deeper into it later I guess.
Thanks for reading me I hope it wasn't too long and boring 😴
I you have any question, please feel free to ask!
