User Requirements
The ISARIC COVID-19 case report form collects data on patients medical history. A detailed completion guide collects data on patients medical history. A planned ISARIC validation study requires a series of SNOMED CT codelists to replicate as closely as possible the details given in the ISARIC case report form. This codelist is designed to identify patients with a rheumatological disorder as described in the ISARIC completion guide.

SNOMED CT

Existing relevant codelists

However, neither are comprehensive enough to cover the breadth of the ISARIC description.

Search terms / synonyms / search strategy
Shrimp Browser was used to identify the major relevant SNOMED CT headings, which were then further screened in detail to ensure codes not relevant to the ISARIC description were excluded. The major relevant SNOMED CT headings identified were:

  • Degenerative disorder of musculoskeletal system(363059001)
  • Chronic arthropathy(38850007)
  • Arthritis(3723001)
  • Disorder of connective tissue(105969002)
  • Vasculitis(31996006)

Inclusion Criteria for Codes
Codes which refer to a condition that causes rheumatological issues, i.e. some effect on joints, muscles, bones, and connective tissues, leading to symptoms such as joint pain, stiffness, swelling, or limited range of motion.

Exclusion Criteria for Codes
Codes which refer to highly localised condition (e.g. retinal arteritis) are excluded, since where disease is isolated it will not cause rheumatological issues.

Borderline cases
Some broader terms exist such (e.g. Arteritis), which could refer to either systemic of highly localised conditions. These terms are included where they are deemed more likely refer to a systemic condition.
