audio input?

just discovered this incredible project.
perhaps way out of scope but i'm wondering has there been any thought about adapting for audio input, to work with acoustic instruments also?
polyphonic audio to midi is a complex task and likely latency involved, so perhaps more of a lighting effect vs the learning tool that this can be with a midi keyboard.
