Since we are considering a new input daemon system, I'd like to point out that we had many complaints at the time like "hey this script doesn't work on my machine".

I think we should consider Docker/CI jobs to test that the scripts do indeed add whatever user to whatever group, runs the right way, etc. both in dev and installed environemnts.

We could even have one for Arch, one for Ubuntu, one for Fedora. That should cover most users anyways.
