Why you use custom protocol?

Hello. I am working on my template for the Electron application and I use this repo as a sample. I wonder why you create a custom protocol app?

The documentation says:

This allows you to use ES6 type = "module" scripts, created by Vue CLI's modern mode

But, in my case (electron v11-v12), the script type = "module" is loaded without any problems if the document is opened by the file: protocol. So in your documentation outdated information, or how?

What are the other advantages or disadvantages of using an custom protocol?
