Is it a bug?

  • I know this is an issue with the app, and contacting Mullvad support is not relevant.

I have checked if others have reported this already

  • I have checked the issue tracker to see if others have reported similar issues.

Current Behavior

I do not have Lockdown enabled. However, when I turn off the Mullvad VPN, I cannot connect to the internet, which makes specific tasks tricky. This also occurs on my iPhone iOS app. I'm on OSX. Reference: #6369

The devices experiencing the issue:

Expected Behavior

If I disable the VPN, I should still be able to connect to the internet on a valid Wi-Fi or ethernet access point; the connection works for other devices, such as consoles or other MacBooks.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Disable the VPN
  2. Attempt to connect to any web page.
  3. Notice the lack of internet.

Failure Logs

Logs too long, happy to send them in a file somewhere, or tell me the relevant logs needed, so I can trim it.

Operating system version

Macbook Air M1, 2020 8GB MacOS Sequoia 15.3 and iPhone 15 - iOS 18.3.1

Mullvad VPN app version

2024.3

I upgraded to the latest version and also did some debugging myself. I was able to fix it for my laptop.

The issue for my Macbook was with my DNS resolver. The DNS resolver was pointing to something that began with 192. and I changed it to 1.1.1.1 this fixed the issue on the Macbook, iOS/iPhone is still not fixed, but it is likely the same issue. I am under the impression that Mullvad is overwriting DNS settings, not sure what caused it however.

Update: I turned off DNS content blockers on my iPhone, which seemed to fix it. I never had this enabled on my PC. I don't know if these settings transfer between clients. However, before opening a ticket, I checked these settings on my Mac, and they weren't enabled.
