I've been using the summary mode for nearly a year now. I'm pretty sure I've never decided I should hold back on saving my changes for some reason. I just do it when I think of it. Currently every 10 clicks or so because I'm scared I'll lose my changes.
So, from a UX pov, going the route of autosave makes sense to me.
Something like:
At any attempt to leave the page, if something has changed, autosave.
If at least C checkboxes have been changed, and M minutes has passed since the last save, and S seconds have passed since the last checkbox change, autosave.
Remove the save link.
