What you need to start

Connecting to the server

  • Connect to PSU VPN using GlobalProtect VPN client
    • The portal address is Secure-connect.psu.edu.
    • You will need to do 2fa at this stage
  • ssh into the host cse-cbmedg01.psu.edu
    • You will need to do 2fa at this stage
    • Your username/password are your PSU access account.

Using the server

  • Your home directory has a 2 Gb quota. Use it to to store anything that you want backed up daily. For example,
    • Your code
    • Small data files
  • Use /resesarch/<username>/ for other storage. It is NOT backed up.
  • Use archival storage as a way to backup data more than 2 Gb (NOTE: As of 8/2/2021, archival storage is no longer available):
    • We have storage that is located outside the server. This is called archival storage. It is not mounted on our server. To access the storage, see below.
    • Use archival storage to copy over data that is more permanent in nature. Archival storage is not only an alternate location for your data, it itself is backed up regularly by ACI. For example, any datasets from old papers that you want to preserve can be copied to archival storage when the project is stable.
  • Please use the slack channel "server" to communicate regarding day-to-day use.
  • It is recommended that you use version control for your code, e.g. GitHub. If you are a member of the medvedevgroup GitHub org, you can have unlimited private repos
  • If you have data that more than 2 Gb that you would like to backup, your best option is to use archival storage to store it (see below).

Accessing backups of your home directory

Snapshots (for 7 days)

A snapshot is made daily of all /home/<username> directories at 6:25 AM and are kept for 7 days. The snapshots are stored on the same machine but on a different disk partition. They can help restore files if they were accidentaly deleted, or if the home partition is corrupted. However, they will not help in the case of a more broad failure. If you need to restore a file, look for it in /research/backups/snapshots/<date>/<username>. Use the cp command to copy the file wherever you want. Do not move the file or delete/modify any files in /research/backups/snapshots.

Longer-term backups

These are stored off the server, for up to 9 months. They are intended for the case of broad system failure on the server. To access these backups, we have to work with IT support staff.

Accessing archival storage:

Archival storage resides on datamgr.aci.ics.psu.edu, and the directory of our data is /archive/pzm11/default. To access the data, here are some options suggested by IT staff:

Help

  • Use the server channel on slack as a first point for questions that you think other lab members might have encounetered.
  • To get help regarding the archival storage or the ACI accounts, submit a ticket to the i-ASK center: https://iask.aci.ics.psu.edu
  • For other help, contact [email protected]
