Don't know how to "read" the mnemonic / wallet passphrase #992

I have saved the wallet passphrase via screenshot, so there are 4 columns each having 6 words stacked over each other except the first one where it is 7 words. So in total 25 words and they are also all in this list: https://github.com/monero-project/monero/blob/master/src/mnemonics/english.h

However, when I try to restore my wallet with date 2017-01-01, it tells me "Error: Electrum-style word list failed verification".

Now I am at a loss:

  • am I reading the list wrong (doing it from left to right and then from up to down, i.e. first word is leftmost word in the top row, second word is the one in the second column top row etc.)?
  • is it possible that the language of the words (english) is not recognized in the app (menu and all the rest is in German)?
  • could it be that the list is somehow "invalidated", i.e. the passphrase has become unusable assuming the words are correctly entered?
  • could I get that error when there is no XMR in the wallet?

I am pretty sure that my screenshot is from 4 years ago (timestamp says so) and since it is a screenshot, I don't see where I am getting things wrong. Hope someone can help me.

The link leads to another page, I don't see how that is affiliated with the app. I'd rather keep the conversation here, thanks.

Good instincts. That was a phishing attempt.

Yes, that is the correct way to read the word list. It's possibly a problem with running the app in German, as it might be expecting the german version of the words. Can you change the app to English in the app's settings and see if that lets you restore without an issue?

The app's settings icon is in the upper left corner on my Pixel 9 Pro but my upper status bar covers it, so I cannot press the cogwheel :(

Doesn't the app automatically detect the language?

The app should default to your phone's language (German, from your earlier post?), but you can manually override that in the app settings. But if the settings button isn't clickable on your device, that is another bug that needs to be submitted separately.

I managed to access the settings (here is more on the issue) and switched the language to English but that didn't help either.

This is the screenshot I have with the words covered. I am pretty sure this is from an old version of Monerujo, isn't it?
