Possible to use Mariner without the USB gadget part?

Hello, i have a little SBC called c.h.i.p. which has almost the same specs as the Pi Zero W, and a GPIO with UART, it runs on Debian Jessie. I was wondering if i could use it to monitor and start prints only, as the USB gadget part would need me to fiddle with the kernel. Is mariner capable of starting prints that are on the flash drive plugged in the printer board?

Yes, it certainly is. The USB-drive and control functionality are completely separate AFAIK.

I don't think it is actually. At least not right now. The functionality are completely separate like @daxliniere pointed out. However, the list of files that is shown in the UI comes from disk - not from the printer. So you wouldn't be able to see the list of files from the flash drive. You would only be able to pause/resume and check the status of prints that are running and even that might not fully work since mariner has to rely on reading the file that will be printed to render metadata about the print.

Some of this is, of course, addressable. If someone is interested to work on this we could open an issue for it. However, functionality would be severely limited. I don't think we would be able to render as much information about the file that is being printed if you have a setup like this.
