Instructions for running Ubuntu on NAND (i.e. running Ubuntu without having to use an SD card) using pre-compiled kernels

I've made available my test kernels for anyone interested in trying Ubuntu on NAND.
You will need my SD card kernel "3.0.8-linuxium-kernel.img-ubuntu-sdcard", my NAND kernel "3.0.8-linuxium-kernel.img-ubuntu-nand"
and parameter file "parameter-linuxium-ubuntu" together with an Ubuntu root filesystem.
Note that this is an old RK3066 3.0.8 kernel that I built for experimenting some time ago.
It does support USB Ethernet adaptor (as this is what I use) but probably won't support wifi and BT as I don't need them. Sorry.
Up side is therefore it should work on a variety of RK3066 devices (definitely the UG802 and A200) and likely others!
1. I use the RKAndroidToolv1.35 which is available, for example, with the 2dark/Finless 1.7 UG802 ROM

so download and extract this ROM on your Windows machine together with downloading the three files documented above.
2. First you have to prepare your NAND:
2a. Connect your RK3066 device (with the reset button depressed) to your Windows machine and wait for the 'Found RKAndroid' message.
2b. Start the RKAndroidToolv1.35 application and un-check all the check-boxes except for Loader
and then click on 'Erase NAND (IDB)' to clean/remove existing NAND partitions.
2c. Now select 'parameter-linuxium-ubuntu' for your parameter file and select its corresponding check-box on the left.
You will notice that the addresses will change.
2d. Next select '3.0.8-linuxium-kernel.img-ubuntu-sdcard' for your kernel file and select its corresponding check-box on the left.
2e. Finally select the check-box on the left of boot to include the default Android boot image.
2f. Then making sure you have four (4) check-boxes selected (loader, parameter, kernel and boot) go ahead and click on 'Flash ROM'.
3. The next step is to create an Ubuntu root filesystem on the device's NAND:
3a. Disconnect the RK3066 device, insert your SD card (with the Ubuntu root filesystem on it labelled as linuxroot) and boot the device.
3b. Shortly you will get the Ubuntu login screen so log in and fire up a terminal and enter 'sudo su -' to get to a root shell.
3c. Enter 'mkfs.ext4 /dev/mtdblock0' to create an ext4 filesystem on your NAND.
3d. You can now create a mount point (mkdir /mnt/ubunturfs) and mount your NAND drive (mount /dev/mtdblock0 /mnt/ubunturfs).
3e. Change directory to the temp directory on the SD card (cd /tmp). You can use a pre-existing Ubuntu root filesystem or you can
download the clean sample Ubuntu 12.04 root filesystem "ubuntu1204-rfs.gz" file

and then enter 'gunzip -d ubuntu1204-rfs.gz' which will creates a file called ubuntu1204-rfs so then
enter 'cd /mnt/linuxroot' followed by 'cpio -ivdum < /tmp/ubuntu1204-rfs' to create your ubuntu root filesystem on your NAND drive.
3f. Tidy up by entering 'cd /tmp' and 'rm ubuntu1204-rfs' and unmount your NAND drive by 'umount /mnt/linuxroot'.
3g. Power off your RK3066 device and remove the SD card.
4. The last step is to flash your RK3066 device with a kernel that boots from your newly created NAND drive:
4a. Re-connect your RK3066 device (with the reset button depressed) to your Windows machine and wait for the 'Found RKAnsroid' message.
4b. Un-check all the check-boxes except for Loader.
4c. Next select '3.0.8-linuxium-kernel.img-ubuntu-nand' for your kernel file and select its corresponding check-box on the left.
4d. This time make sure you only have two (2) check-boxes selected (loader and kernel) before going ahead and clicking on 'Flash ROM'.
5. Disconnect the RK3066 device from Windows and boot the device.
You should now get the Ubuntu login screen and once logged you should find a Linux partition of around 3.5GB loaded with the root filesystem.
If you used my sample clean Ubuntu root filesystem you'll have around 1.8GB (or over 50%) free space to play with.
