looks like this was proposed (#15173 (comment)) before as a smooth audio fast forwarded output solution but seemingly only the resampling bit of this was ever merged

Just to confirm, the referenced PR does solve the crackling issue. It just also results in high-pitched audio. The benefit of time stretching is that you should be able to get the crackle-free audio without the pitch-shifting of the current implementation.
