Why is it so hard for me to choose a major?
Hey guys, to give you the run down I’m currently a second year in a state college and I’m undecided. Registration for the Fall Semester starts soon and I’m running out of time so I need to choose a major. Everyone I’ve talked to tells me to just choose one and if I don’t like it, then I can simply switch to another. But the thing is even choosing one. single. major. is hard for me. My friend tells me it’s because I can’t find a major I like that I have a back-up plan for, meaning it’s hard for me to personally find a major that I think is reliable. I’m always that friend who is indecisive and overthinks a lot and I like to stay organized. I’m very introverted and at my current part-time job, I find it hard for me to make small talk with the customers. I feel like everything I say to them is forced out and unnatural unlike my coworkers who are very people orientated.
Right now I don’t have any passions or hobbies. I use to be in drum-line in high school but music is not something I would personally pursue career wise. In my free time I surf around social media looking at memes or hangout with my brother. I kinda feel empty in a sense that I don’t have a passion to drive me towards a career path or anything.
I don’t mind an office job, I’ve always like the idea of a fun office setting. Some of the majors/careers I’ve considered are psychology (but I don’t want to go to grad school for that), statistics, nursing (only because all my Filipino relatives tell me that’s what I should do), accounting, medical laboratory, health science, architect (because both my parents are currently architects) and even event planning (only because I follow someone on instagram who is an event planner and it looks like a fun job, but I feel like I’m way too shy for that).
I don’t know what I expect from this post, I kind of just needed to let it out. If you read this entire post thank you for your time.
I would not rule out event planning just because you are shy, I am very shy and introverted and as I started to get more experience at work and school I started to become more comfortable in certain social situations. It’s not like I’ll ever become a social butterfly but I’ve learned to interact with people and not feel constantly anxious and drained at the end of the day.

I would not suggest nursing just because your family is pushing you towards it. While it’s a great career for the right person, it is a high stress job and it’s one that’s gonna require a lot of constant social interaction, so I don’t think that’s a good combination for most introverts.

Accounting and medical laboratory both sound like they might be up your alley. Maybe major in something like biology for now and take an accounting class and do some job shadowing in other areas that interest you so you can narrow down your interests. That way you have a path chosen but there are still chances to change directions if you want to.
Late response (I hope registration hasn't passed yet) but if you're in interested in accounting, there is a huge job market that is only rising for this field. I'm the same way in being introverted, and if you end up in a job where you're directly communicating with clients, the questions asked between you and them are petty straightforward, yes or no responses usually. I worked as a tax assistant for a woman who owned her own tax business and listened to a lot of her phone calls with clients.

But in the end, choose something you enjoy, and good luck!
I’m going to be serious: do what interests you. I almost didn’t become an english major because everybody told me I was going to end up at mcdonalds. If you have any special skill or experience, it doesn’t matter if you got a degree in art or a degree in business. My cousin’s boyfriend went in as a history teacher and he got an internship at a food company that’s paying off his tuition and giving him a job if he graduates on time.
I relate to this post allll the way. I’m too much of an introvert for anything involving public speaking or interacting with people. But I’m going towards nursing rn in hopes it’s something I actually want to do....I’m the same as you, don’t have any real hobbies or passions for anything. Have yet to take a class that deeply interests me. Really hoping for the best with nursing mainly because it pays well and nurses are in high of demand.
This isn’t a bad way to go, the world will always need people like nurses, teachers etc so at least you know you have a job. I would try to get into some hobbies though! Both for the sake of having something to do for fun other than playing on your phone and the possibility of discovering a future career or side business. It’s also fine to just have hobbies for their own sake and not have them be your “passion” or “calling”. The idea that everyone has a single thing they are meant to do on this world (usually for money) is complete BS. It is fine to just have a job you like or don’t mind doing; you don’t have to love it or be willing to do it for free or whatever. ",

The only math class i’ve taken so far at csuf is statistics 101 and that was a pretty easy class. As for science, I don’t really like hardcore physics or chemistry but other than that science is pretty cool.",
