I am getting the following error when someone joins the server with Panilla 1.12.2 and running on paper 1.21 build 130:

Oh I missed one line of the error, I'm sorry:

java.lang.ClassCastException: null

Backing up @fabianmakila this indeed still in an issue, but strangely not with every player that logs in, for us at least.
