New version checklist

Do this for every release

• Update and rebuild Sphinx examples
• Update Sphinx documentation for any new / changed syntax
• Update MANIFEST
• Update copyright year in LICENSE, conf.py, setup.py
• Update version in __init__.py, setup.py, docs/source/conf.py
• Update release notes and link to commits where applicable
• Upload x.x.x.x versions to pip (with python setup.py sdist and twine upload dist/*)
  • start using python -m build? (see table at the end of https://blog.ganssle.io/articles/2021/10/setup-py-deprecated.html)
• Confirm that the pip version passes tests in a fresh virtualenv.
• Push final commits to appropriate PR.
• Merge PR, create Github release and tag.
