I would have expected other thumbnail generators to already extract the jpeg previews from raws.

For example? I just remember trying different ones and this application working the best :)

There are others that can work too (most ironically based on dcraw), really anything that can decode RAW can work, but dcraw is well known to be consistent and support quirky cameras, sometimes making it the only vaild option depending on the picture source. The primary convenience is the .thumbnailer entry.
