This addon has been obsolete and unmaintained for a while now. Read the details there. https://github.com/arivald/tbirdExt/issues/7

And anyway, looks like Thunderbird roadmap for the inmediate future will kill the vast majority of the addon environment, citing "safety" as the excuse.

Like you, I'd like this issue fixed, but Arivald won't ever probably read this.

I think Arivald has retired from development - I didn't get him to respond from early last year. If you need external file templates they work quite well now in my Add-on SmartTemplate4.

yep, seems Arivald has really retired developing Addons.
You can find an alternative on AMO SmartTemplates or the repo here at github RealRaven2000/SmartTemplates and you can always trust, Axel do really quite of work to develop and maintain his Addons!
As he took this Addon in his hands (my please in the past was to fix Bugs due Thunderbird updates which destroyed a lot of functions in the original Addon only).
I'm pretty sure he didn't ever believe, that this Project becomes so complex in the Future, if he would do something similar in the future - really don't know - probably not.
I will bet, that this Addon is the hugest one ever for Thunderbird for years.
