I have been using Shimboot for a few months now and had no issues with the Debian installation whatsoever. However, one of the first things I ever tried was booting into the ChromeOS partitions of the USB by pressing 1 or 2 on the start menu. Both of them, no matter which combinations of options I use, go to the ChromeOS boot screen, and freeze indefinitely there.

Device Name: Dell Chromebook 3100 2 in 1
Board Name: Octopus
USB: PNY Pro Elite V2 256GB
USB Gen: 3.2 Gen 2
Shimboot Version: 1.2.1
Using prebuilt Octopus image

Duplicate. The shim kernel is too old for Chrome OS unfortunately.

Oh. Why is it an option then? Are they planning on updating the shim kernel in the future? Or did it used to work with an older version of ChromeOS?

It's an option for chromebooks that have new enough shim kernels
No
I tested it and somewhere around Chrome OS v106 is where it stopped working.
