Bandwidth limitation

Included in v2.0.0

By default the VRT NU addon does not limit the bandwidth (Internet usage) and will favour the best quality stream available. However in some cases you may want to limit the bandwidth usage for a lower quality stream.

Setting a lower bandwidth for Kodi

You can limit the bandwidth for Kodi globally, this is done from the Kodi settings:

Settings » System » Internet access » Internet connection bandwidth limitation

Beware that not all addons adhere to this global Kodi setting, however the VRT NU addon does.

Bandwidth vs stream quality

When you limit the bandwidth you will be affecting the quality of the stream. How bandwidth affects quality depends on the used stream format (codec and encoding options).

The below list was made by testing out some values on existing VRT streams, your mileage may vary.

Bandwidth limit Format Quality Remark
256 kbps 234p 416 x 234
512 kbps 270p 480 x 270
1024 kbps 360p 640 x 360
1536 kbps 432p 768 x 432
2048 kbps 540p 960 x 540 Maximum for most VRT NU streams
3072 kbps 720p 1280 x 720 Only for Live TV streams, see HD quality
5120 kbps 1080p 1920 x 1080 VRT NU does not provide 1080p HD streams
