Bandwidth limitation

By default the VRT NU addon does not limit the bandwidth (Internet usage) and will favour the best quality stream available. However in some cases you may want to limit the bandwidth usage for a lower quality stream.

Setting a lower bandwidth for the plugin

If you only want to limit the bandwidth for the VRT NU stream, you can do this in the Addon settings:

Settings - VRT NU » Video » Internet connection bandwidth limitation

Setting a lower bandwidth for Kodi

In some cases you prefer to limit the bandwidth for Kodi globally, this is possible from the Kodi settings:

Settings » System » Internet access » Internet connection bandwidth limitation

Beware that not all addons adhere to this global Kodi setting. The VRT NU addon does adhere to this setting, and will take the lowest bandwidth limitation from the Addon's setting and the global Kodi setting.

Bandwidth vs stream quality

When you limit the bandwidth you will be affecting the quality of the stream. How bandwidth affects quality depends on the used stream format (codec and encoding options).

The below list was made by testing out some values on existing VRT streams, your mileage may vary.

Bandwidth limit Format Quality Remark
512 kbps 270p 480 x 270
1024 kbps 360p 640 x 360
1536 kbps 432p 768 x 432
2560 kbps 540p 960 x 540 Maximum for most VRT NU streams
3584 kbps 720p 1280 x 720 Only for specific streams, requires DRM
5120 kbps 1080p 1920 x 1080 Currently VRT NU does not use 1080p HD streams
