If you explain what category base and tag base are useful for, as possibly more beginners than just me have no clue what a base even is. But maybe not. Thanks.

I found this article confusing. Pretty and Almost Pretty Links are talked about and to the reader those sound like the best option. And yet, when the WP options are listed, the article doesn’t clarify which option(s) are the pretty or almost pretty links.

It’s not clear where one finds the Optional settings section, in order to create permalinks for category and tag archives. It isn’t displayed as a field in the first screenshot.

If you explain what category base and tag base are useful for, as possibly more beginners than just me have no clue what a base even is. But maybe not. Thanks.

Category Base: The category base is a prefix added to category archive URLs. By default, WordPress uses /category/ before category slugs (e.g., example.com/category/news). It helps differentiate category pages from other parts of your website. You can customize this under Settings → Permalinks in the Optional settings section.

Tag Base: The tag base works similarly but applies to tag archive pages. By default, WordPress uses /tag/ before tag slugs (e.g., example.com/tag/technology). Customizing this setting allows you to use a different prefix, such as /topics/.

I found this article confusing. Pretty and Almost Pretty Links are talked about and to the reader those sound like the best option. And yet, when the WP options are listed, the article doesn’t clarify which option(s) are the pretty or almost pretty links.

1. Pretty Permalinks: These are SEO-friendly and human-readable URLs, such as:

  • /sample-post/ (Post Name)
  • /2024/08/sample-post/ (Month and Name)
  • /category/news/sample-post/ (Category and Post Name)
  • In WordPress Settings: The options like Post Name, Day and Name, Month and Name, and Custom Structure create Pretty Permalinks.

2. Almost Pretty Links: These are user-friendly URLs but require an extra identifier (like an index.php in the URL) when the server doesn’t support mod_rewrite.

  • Example: example.com/index.php/sample-post/
  • In WordPress Settings: This happens when permalinks are set to a custom structure on a server that does not support URL rewriting.

It’s not clear where one finds the Optional settings section, in order to create permalinks for category and tag archives. It isn’t displayed as a field in the first screenshot.

  • The Optional Settings section is found under Settings → Permalinks in the WordPress dashboard.
  • It appears below the main permalink structure settings. This section allows users to change the category base and tag base for archive URLs.
  • The article should include a screenshot highlighting the Optional Settings section and its location on the Permalinks settings page for better clarity.
