You probably need alsa-firmware and maybe a newer kernel on SteamOS Main, but also you will maybe run into this bug which will make your system unbootable https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217510

It seems there is no Driver Support for Soundblaster AE-9 in any Linux Distribution including SteamOS (Linux based). I hope there will be more Driver support. I have opened a Bug in Bugzilla.Kernel.org (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219552) too.

Creative doesn´t make any Linux Drivers for all Soundblaster Cards, so the hope is only the Linux Community...

Just one man (Connor McAdams) developed Soundblaster AE-7 and AE-5 support for Linux 4 Years ago.
Driver development in the Linux area needs to improve, Linux is lagging far behind in this area.

I don´t buy me a new Soundcard only for Linux.

I used to have an AE-9 either and tried to contact Connor to do something about linux support by myself. But my card is asmedia chip version rather than IDT version, causing my kernel can't even boot, so I gave up :(

But Connor gave me some information and an unfinished support patch series about AE-9, hope they would help you:

I give it a try, but i´m not the Pro User like Connor Mcadams and its very complicated.

I can test this Patches with my own compiled Linux Kernel and implement the Patches to it, then i can see what works and what not

I tested these patches from Connor McAdams today and compiled a kernel with these CA0132 patches, but no luck, still no sound. Connor McAdams wrote to me about 2 weeks ago and said in his emails that there is still a lot of work to be done here.
The Windows driver of the Soundblaster AE9 needs to be observed and an implementation for the Linux driver needs to be written based on that.
Unfortunately, I am not a Pro User who can handle this.

@Headcrabed Can I attach the e-mail dump and the AE9 patches to the bug at Bugzilla.Kernel.Org?

AE-7 faces the same issue with that asmedia chip. I'm stuck using my AE5 - Plus because of it rather than my AE-7. As of now, the AE5 and AE5 - Plus are the best dedicated sound card on Linux in terms of quality, support, and the amount of features that actually work.

I emailed asmedia to get some information about that asm chip, but no reply at all :(
