Game Gear to Master System ROM hacks don't respond to controller input

I currently am on the latest firmware, but I have been unable to use the ROM hacks that convert Game Gear games into Master System format. More specifically, I have been trying to play Phantasy Star Gaiden and Sylvan Tale (in English) with these patches from https://www.smspower.org/Hacks/GameGearToMasterSystem. My games load, but my controller does not respond to the game itself for some reason. I have managed to play Phantasy Star Adventure with the Game Gear to Master System patch and it responds to my controller input. I have tried loading the games with their respective core without any luck.
