Control Scheme Error

Hello!
I was able to get both Descent and Descent 2 running on my N3DS by following the readme instructions to a tee. Unfortunately, whenever I start a new game (at least in D1,) my ship goes into a clockwise spin and I am also unable to activate the options menu, thus I am unable to save before quitting back to the menu.
At first I thought one of my controls was malfunctioning, but after testing that theory I believe the issue is with the control scheme implemented by default in the game itself, something to do with the circlepad perhaps?

I know this hasn't really been touched in a while but this is absolutely my favorite game and one I've been wanting to see run on this hardware for a long time.
I'll continue looking into it and see if I can't figure out the issue.
