RLV presets - Who uses these?

I''m all for easy menus, but the presets seem a little "clumsy" when it comes to handling RLV restrictions.

I've used RLV for quite a few years, and it's one of the first things I ignore. Is this some kind of "cheat sheet" for new users?

Hi dracnoc, those "presets" were "macros" in OpenCollar V 6 and came about because someone thought there were too many individual restrictions to handle, and grouping some of them in categories with a rp type name would relieve the logjam. They used to be named Macros but that was confusing for a lot of people. In the end we restored all the original individual restrictions and added more, and shuffled the menus so it was easier to get to individual restrictions but also kept some of the "macros" and named them "presets." "Presets" is now a jumble of themed restrictions and the most popular individual restrictions.

Hiya. That does make a lot of sense! But ... I still find it clumsy. I think the point I'm making is that controlling RLV has reaching limitations to the person having to deal with it. For example, there are situations where hiding names may be useful, but this is bundled in with minimap/map on the presets. I would prefer to see these seperated. I can see a lot of owners/happy-grab-collar users simple making the whole experience miserable because they don't know what they're doing (which is usually the bane of collars/RLV).

Most of the restrictions that are in the presets are also available as individual restrictions in the Advanced menu. For instance, show/hide names is listed under Show/Hide category there. You can check it in the same page I just posted.

Yes, that's true. The point is that the Presets come first, so it's an easy click for the "trigger happy" collar owners. If anything, I'd make RLV controls harder to avoid disappointment later. I've been in SL too long to see how RLV has been used 'n' abused. It's hard enough to find someone who knows what they're doing.

So ... To that end, I find the Presets counter-productive. Sure, nice idea but it leads to disappointment.

Ok, well when we made the last round of changes to the RLV menu, there were a lot of people who had gotten used to the "Macros" and a lot of people who still missed having individual restrictions since before the Macros were built, and still another group of people who wanted to keep the RLV "terminal" to type in the raw rlv command. That last group is still out there. We did the best balance we could get between having every restriction available by menu and preserving some presets for backward compatibility and convenience. Come up with a better design and suggest it. Are you aware you can create and remove presets?

ALMOST every RLV restriction is available via the advanced options menu. All of the ones that are used in presets are. Clicking a preset is a lot easier and friendlier to most people than navigating through a list of 62 individual restrictions to figure out what they want to actually set. Presets can also be easily edited to suit the individual user. I don't really see what more we can do to make this both as easy AND as flexible as possible.
