files have spurious white space

Files in this repo have spurious white space (space characters) at line ends and on blank lines. These should be removed, and the commit hook checking for spurious whitespace should be added to the repo.

The git whitespace check has been added. Still TODO is ensuring all of the files comply with its requirements. (There will likely be a formatting pass done soon on all TDAQ packages.)
