Tiffany's empirical data uncovered several shortcomings of our function make_comm_obj. Specifically in how the plot attributes are handled. Specific problems are

• if environmental variable is a single vector then it needs to be treated as a data.frame
• the variable names of the plot attributes get scrambled up when splitting the env_var back out
