Focusing on this for over 10 mins killed my eyes:

For comparison Keyboard-Tutor has less contrast:

So my proposal is grey & seagreen palette like so:

If you agree, then I can make a PR.

Or make it font-weight: bold and color: #707070 along with gray for not written text.
