OSWG goals for 2024

Taking inspiration from the CWG

I thought, as we kick off 2024, it'd be a great opportunity to re-align on what the Open Source Working Group is here for, what we want to focus on, and what we want to achieve over the next year.

The Open Source Working Group's Summary
We are here to:

• Direct open-source, open-data and academic research in areas that advance the field of green software.
• Develop open-source tools to improve the monitoring, measurement and lifecycle assessment of green software.

We have 2 active projects: Impact Framework and Carbon Aware SDK

And 2 projects in need of support: Carbon-ci Pipeline and Awesome Green Software

Areas to consider

• What problem areas are you as Member Organisations currently facing, with regard to Greening Software, that the Opensource Working Group could aim to explore?
• What Opensource tools would be useful to you?

Idea: Set KPIs for the OSWG

• Number of Graduated projects?
• One around supporting our projects better?

The Tooling 'Pillar of Change' 2024 OKRs are

Objective: Improve the Tooling the Green Software Foundation provides
KR1: 1/3rd (20) of our member organisations attend at least one Hatch call in 2024
KR2: 10 new projects launched in 2024
KR3: 95 Participants across all our repos per 28 days
KR4: Oldest Open PR across all our repos is 100 days old

Idea: Collaborate with the wider community

• Partner up with other foundations? eg. CNCF, Green web foundation
• Joint attend Conferences?

The GSF is able to collaborate and partner with the wider community.
If we partner with other foundations, we must follow this process: set up an MoU, have it reviewed by our legal reps and then finally ratified by SC. The Policy WG are about to have an MoU approved with SustainableIT.

Idea: Support OSWG projects to success

We want to set our projects up for success.
How do we support our projects more?
What are their needs? - technical, non technical, learning needs
Ensuring they are unblocked

Idea: Increase contributors to the OSWG projects

How do we help projects find the contributors they need
And encourage more contributors to our OSWG projects

• Project teams to keep the README.md (a paragraph to get people excited) and the contributing.md file (what our ask is and our required time expectation / week) updated

Idea: Create new small projects

We can also consider creating much smaller projects too which could be delivered with 3 participants but provide significant value.

Idea: Increase the adoption of the OSWG projects

What value are our projects delivering to the community? Is the value clear?
What use cases do they have?
How do we increase outreach / marketing / internal advocacy within member orgs to increase adoption?
How could we use Community champions and experts more to talk about our OSWG projects

Another consideration we should think about is what happens after we have graduated a project, how are we amplifying those projects so that we don’t fall into “we built it but nobody came” trap?

Idea: Produce a document outlining dates on when we need to do things by

How do I actually know what is actually required by when - which regulations are out there for what I have to show when, for developing software sustainably and adhering to all regulations
eg. GHG protocol needs evidence by x, US bill requesting AI measurement
Why: This will help software practitioners making the internal business case to prioritise greening software within architecture design decision making
Discussion touched on would this fall under Opensource WG or possibly Policy WG?

This idea was raised to the Policy WG as a new suggested project by @NAMRATA-WOKE.

This project proposal is seeking a PL and is open for contributors

Idea: AI and how do we report on it's impact
What: Define the impact of an Artificial intelligence solution, compare the different ways you could approach an AI solution and let the user see what each impact the AI route would be and advise best to take

The IF team aren't building this themselves, but are building the infrastructure to allow others to do this. There might be an AI plug-in added during the Hackathon
Impact Framework isn't only aiming to tackle measurement for AI, it's for a whole range of architecture. Possibly including training AI as one step.

I found discussion notes from the Standards WG, located on a new GreenAI repo.

From @seanmcilroy29 Standards WG PM - It is likely that a new project will emerge from the current GreenAI discussions, but its nature is still uncertain. @tholewis may lead a proposed project, though this may be subject to change depending on the project's requirements.

Idea: Different tools are hard to get the information they need. It'd be useful to have something showing use cases for how it works with each technology stack.

Impact Framework
We have plug-ins that wrap APIs from Microsoft's Azure (convenient exposed APIs)
But we don't have the same for AWS, or Google cloud - but these could be community built plug-ins.
The others do have exposed APIs, but if they aren't as good, we could use proxys for the data. eg. worst case we infur data from billing information.
