Each tax season, working Chicagoans leave more than $230 million on the table by not taking the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Chicagoans might be missing out because they don’t file for the EITC, they don’t know it exists, or they file for it incorrectly. Regardless, the lack of awareness of the EITC that has real consequences—families are missing out on an average federal refund of $2,300.

Money

Mayor Emanuel is committed to getting the information out so that more residents can take advantage of the EITC. He announced today that the City is providing an additional $500,000 in funding to hire tax preparation site leaders, expanding the hours and days of the sites so that they can provide free assistance to Chicagoans.

EITC event

TaxPrepChicago.org, also launched today, helps you find the closest tax preparation site, prepare your taxes for free, and know your rights when you choose to use a paid tax preparer. Give it a whirl.

The code used to build this site was also free, thanks to the #OpenGov community in Chicago. A big thank you to Derek Eder from OpenGov Chicago. The site was built using his Searchable Map Template.
