Issue request from custom widget as the signed in portal identity

Is it possible to use the jwt token from the current session for the signed in user in a custom widget in order to issue a request towards an API in the same APIM instance? The assumption is that it would be stored in the session storage of the browser but it seems like that is not reachable from within the context of the widget.

We would like to be able to use the same session to call an API within the APIM instance and display some information in the portal.
