What

Synced patterns are convenient as the design customization can be carried over to all the places that the pattern/block's used. But, if there's a need to change the underlying block content, there isn't a way to do that without detaching the pattern first, thus losing the sync'd design.

Why

Came up as a customer request in 9174870-zen. They have a synced pattern and would like to change the underlying video blocks across various places, while retaining the pattern design. It's not possible at this time.

That's not true! You can set overrides and then change the synced pattern content on a per pattern basis: https://learn.wordpress.org/lesson/explore-synced-pattern-overrides/
